I'd take everything down to the gel coat (or below for repairs.) It is difficult to tell the quality of materials and prep for the previous finishes.

Everybody does paint/body work a little different. Yes, I always head for that gel coat as my foundation for a good paint job. The gel coat is a nice hard base to build epoxy, polyester primer, 2k etc off of. Just watch digging in too much with the liquid stripper. I'm not afraid of taking upper layers off with liquid stripper but when I get close to the gel coat I like to remove the layer right above the gel coat by carefully sanding with a DA. You can liquify and smear that gel coat making much more work for yourself. Doing that can also break into mat/cloth which can print up through your paint system.

Someone mentioned Glitterbug earlier , but your body is actually a Glitterbug copy made by Trophy Cars from Sanford Florida, how close to that area are you I am curious. The key here is the raised area of the dash for the radio location on the right. Here is a pic of another Bart DBArchives [img]

Work on buggy came to a halt when I seen how bad the body was warped.
The warp was bad enough the body had to be split.
With the help of a friend who repairs and paints Yachts, so work on buggy has started again.

The glass at top of sides were over an inch thick where body was cut.
Grinding the extra material off will help when putting the different layers of glass back on to get back the original body lines.

I am using west systems epoxy and the best glass fiber on the market.
The glass has a mat back multidimensional weave all in one.

I also have cab-O-sil for bonding the outer body panel permanently to body.
West systems has available 5 different grades of cab-o-sil. Depending how strong or how easy you want it to sand you have a choice to make. For bonding I am using Mar-Pro cab-o-sil and for filling voids between glass layers and also used in place of polyester fillers I am using the red west systems 401 cab-o-sil. I was informed this is the best for flexible fiberglass bodies.

Thanks Paul, I lurk everyday in the split bus forum hoping get more bus porn of your Westy, you know I am a Westy freak.
I will be posting a new build soon. My 59 kombi. I am hoping to have it driving by the end of Sept.

Lo cash John, I am 30 min south west of Lake City. I am located by the Suwanee River near Branford FL.
I checked out your Jo-Cali build in your album. I am in the middle of completing the build for my kombi.

I think if I had to go thru the extreme of cutting the body like you did, I would of extended it to a full pan size. Gives a whole lot more room for people in the back seat area.

Would have been nice to extend body for more room, I really did not know the body needed to be cut until the pan was already shortened.

Body was warped and would not fit my newly shortened pan was reason for cutting body.

Watch out for body's stored outside on ground without a pan.

Hoping to jump back on this project before end of spring. Having to much fun with the bus the last couple of years and have not been motivated.
