Used this monster today to pull my drums:

I borrowed this thing from work, an amazon.com three-jaw puller. It was really freakin' scary pulling these drums...I did the math and calculated I was pulling with at least 8000 pounds of force without budging them. Finally got them moving with some sharp hammer blows to the hub combined with the pulling.

I had the drums off a few years ago and greased the splines upon reassembly, but I found no sign of grease in there once I got them off this time.

I'm going to try the silver looking anti-seize when I reassemble, because this brake job has turned into a giant time sink.

^^^That looks pretty sketchy. I use the same puller Jung Restoration posted, works great, just use longer bolts and not the lug bolts.

I saw one like that on Amazon but it had a 7.5 inch max diameter, which was a bit too small. Do you have a link for yours?

All four were like this. The shoes were welded to the drums.

Here it is in use. Yes, I'm wearing white shorts and a white shirt, not necessary to use this puller.

Looks like the $60 dollar one with free shipping only does a 190mm bolt circle.. Does it actually work?

Yeah, as hazetguy says you need to use longer bolts though.

the one I've had for a few years now I got from NAPA, it's the KD-2251 3 arm puller.

A few other options:

OTC # G- 827-B (four arm, use 3 for our application)
OTC # 7394 (3 arm)
OTC # 7393 (same as the KD-2251)

I've always used stock lug bolts myself with the OTC puller. I might be less inclined if I didn't have spares.

that said - take one with you when you go, and get something with threads anywhere from lets say 3/4 to 2 inches longer. 1/2 might be fine, but your going to lose some length due to not having the acorn head.

but me, I just use the stock bolts. Smile

general rule of thumb is you want 1/2 the diameter of the bolt's worth of thread engagement. though I dont think the drum is actually that thick in those areas. so just use your judgement as your thread it in to determine if you have enough engagement.

once you get it good and tight, if it doesnt start coming off relatively easy, start tapping on the end of the puller (not hammering hard, just vibrations) and the sides of the drum. DO grease/oil/antisieze the threads of the shaft, but DO NOT use an impact wrench (OK to use it to run it up tight, but dont use it to do the real work. use the included hammer headed thing if you need that kind of force.

I think mine are 2" long or so, I just told the local bolt place I needed some 14mm X 1.5 bolts.

That's how I've done it, except with a hydraulic bottle jack. Not pretty but works!

It'll NOT work for wide five = 205mm.
It says it only goes up to 200mm.

- 2 pressure pieces (flat and pointed)
- 10 x 185 mm hardened spindle with 190 mm sliding T-bar
drive: 1/2" 4-pt. and 21 mm 6-pt.
- 2 discs for holding the extraction feets,
chrome-plated, Ø 62 and 100 mm
suitable for 3 -, 4 -, 5 - and 6-hole wheel hubs
and brake drums with pitch circle diameter up to 200 mm

Thanks.

I might get this one, if I won't find something better and not too expensive. After all, what's 5mm? Laughing

Nothing a die grinder can't handle...
30 EUR seems like a good deal.
