My situation involved driving around town. I turned the AC on and the High Speed Fan would kick on with it. I turned it on and off a few times to figure out if the AC was related to the fan and it turns out it is! I have since installed a new fuse box and things seem to be going well. I notice that the AC still triggers the fan but that it triggers the fan at a low speed. It has also been cooler today so I don't know if that has an impact on how the fan engages. My van is a 87 Wolfsburg 2wd. Where would it's AC fan switch relay be located?

Ok. Sheesh, where'd i get that, then? I was going through a high gauge temp thing with my coolant system and it seemed to match that behavior as well. It was months ago though, and i didn't save that to a link or whatever.

That's how it works. When the A/C compressor clutch engages, it triggers the cooling fan to run... even my Cabriolet does that. However, unlike my Cabriolet, the vans have multi-speed cooling fans. Thus, when the coolant gets hot enough to trigger the high-speed side of the fan, the A/C relay will cut power to the A/C compressor.

The relays are mounted to the D-pillar, even in tin-tops.

The relay in question is the tall one on the far right.

There is also another cooling fan-associated relay up in the dash, behind the left/driver's vent.
