Never mind, all these old Volkswagens are beautiful. VW had one of the best design departments on the planet. Absolutely every line and contour is in exactly the right place. People wouldn't pay what they do for barndoor deluxes if they were not spectacularly beautiful. Oh and zwitters too of course.

i sold my 11/4/52 Zwitter last year and it also had a solid VW emblem...the story i got was that emblem ended with the start of the Zwitter change and some left-over solid emblems made it onto some early 1952 Zwitters. |

as i was going through progressive refinements, I was surprised to see how many changes were made during the short zwitter span. Some like the strap air cleaner starting jan2/53 are easy to see, a lot not visible like larger intake valves, a different intake manifold support Nov 10/52 (beaded sheet metal strip instead of just pipe) Jan20/53 a different oil pump shaft, Feb13/53 carb and fuel pump nipple now 40 degrees instead of 60. Jan31/53 the telescopic shock absorber now a "Hemscheidt" make for 5000 vehicles. Maybe short of stock? Ones like Dec30/52 the tires get improved clearance through 5mm shorter supports at the body.
Love this stuff!

I've been under the impression that the following is true:
Solid like the one in the picture without a horizontal line between the V and W is early 1950 and back.
Solid with a line between the V and W is mid 1950 - early 52 (split window era)
Then it goes into the 1953-1960 version. |
I'm reviving this thread as I cannot find a definitive answer to Nancy's query above:
When did the badge change from this:
To this:
Cheers,
Dave |

OK, but what about the hood? Are there any changes through years? _________________ Proud to be Croat! |

Examples of the late solid badge with the recess areas painted in body colour:
^L11 Pastel Green?
^L36 Azure Blue?
Looks like the grooves - the circle, and within the V and the W - may have been highlighted in black?
I’m wondering if the 51-55 Barndoor Deluxe centre pod solid badge, whose recess areas seem to have been unpainted, may have had grooves highlighted in black.
Bus version discussion here, btw:

I have seen old solid emblems with remnants of original looking paint on the flat surfaces, but would be surprised if the dealer got into that level of detailing on a new car. Could they have been factory painted when new? |
The blue on the L36 badge (mine) above was really well adhered…making me think it was applied at the factory. _________________ -StockRocks-

RockStock, that's a nice emblem, it indeed looks like Azureblau! Very interesting about the possibility of black highlights in the smaller emblem grooves. If so, what a work of art! _________________ "Criticism comes easier than Craftsmanship"

Just for reference, an NOS badge. Tabs bolt upright. Dirty, as found (not mine). Unpainted.
