Put some new bushings on the sliding windows. Was wondering why on earth the windows wouldn't latch shut... Bushings were $4.95 apiece from bus depot.
On the passenger side, they were snug going in. On the drivers side, they just didn't want to go in at all. They're maybe 0.5mm too tall, so I grabbed a razor and shaved off a small amount from just the front to get it started and tapped in with a tack hammer. Easy peasy.

Put a new piece of cardboard under it to contain the new oil leak...
Looks like the center exhaust bracket gave up the ghost and those 2 bottom
case bolts are now loose and spinning. Anyone ever seen this before...???

Wired in a Inverter (Krieger) to my AUX battery. It's got a pretty cool display to show the watts used and voltage--even though it's probably overkill for my needs.
Also to ensure I am getting the battery charged back up. Installed a NOCO Genius charger under the sink.
I am still using the GoWesty Aux kit, so next up will be beefing the charging cable to the solenoid. _________________ 1984 Westfalia |

A couple weeks ago I began preparation for (late) summer vacation:
Changed oil & filter, checked tire pressure, lubed shift linkage, checked coolant level, hoses and clamps, checked for leaks, replaced plug wires w/ NGK 7mm blue, and checked plugs. Contact cleaner to all grounds I could find. Checked running lights and aligned foglights. Installed bra. Cleaned windows and wipers.
I had hoped to address that annoying squeak/pop in the clutch pedal by now but it didn't happen. So I just hosed it down with spray lithium grease...
I then started packing for a trip to the Mountain states and left last week.
I will post details on the adjacent sticky "things my van did recently." _________________ =BCE56=

87 Multivan- Installed shifter rebuild kit. From VC. Now my gear linkage has all been rebuilt from the rear bushing to the Delrin ears and cutting the shifting rod to install a piece of another old shifter to replace heavily worn shaft.
While I was there I pulled the wires from the cooling fan and cleaned the contacts as well.
Installed a new IAC on my 2.2 and replaced some Hose clamps I didn't like. As well as refilled my diesel Espar tank from a cold weekend in Bend, I used almost a half gallon of Kerosene.
Finalized my window express up kit, I have a "TWINDOW" module installed which powers my windows both up and down. There is a 2nd input for a remote or alarm, I tied it to the power door locks to express the window up when you lock the door. I had to convert a constant hot signal to a momentary Neg signal with a device built from " The 12volt.com" works like a dream.
Pulled the remaining bolt form my G57 caliper which came loose on the almost 7 miles of washboard road. These were converted years ago and use a 16 x1.50 60mm bolt. Found a replacement At McMaster Carr and some Wedge lock washers to seal the deal.
That's enough for one day.

Finished task of upgrading the dome light. The stock light above driver door did not work well. Decided to go LED using one of those little tap lights that operate on 3 AAA batteries. Checked the internet and found option to wire a resistor in the positive line to reduce voltage so the lights could work on van battery. Mounted it in center above mirror. Liked it so much I replace the light above the bench and the light in back over the deck lid with the same tap lights all wired to the door switch. No more black pit at night.
used these:

Installed INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FOIL REPAIR KIT from Vanagon.org. Less expensive than GW's and very easy to install. _________________ '85 Westy

This didnt take place just today, but over the last couple weeks.
Replaced the canvas top, wouldn't do it again for $1000.
I am still waiting on a threshold to come in to finish the floor, I have ordered 3 of them and keep getting the wrong color sent to me.
For climbers out there, who may have bad backs, the Metolious crash pad is a perfect fit.

Over the last two weekends I installed the Jack Bombay struts to assist getting the top up. They're awesome and super easy to install. I put in my charger from Gowesty and hooked it up using the fuse panel and cleaned everything up around my auxiliary battery. Way nicer that way. Also installed the Campervanculture powered vent, http://campervanculture.com/shop/westfalia-fridge-vent-plate-with-high-quality-power-points-grey/. Super easy install and great to have power in the back of the van. Also replaced some leaky sink plumbing that I've been meaning to do and installed new sliding window screens that are nice. Still have a long list but first thing is going to be a good detail and a camping trip! _________________ '87 Syncro Westy Ron Burgundy

Yesterday, I solved the mystery ground issue that I had been experiencing since the Dempster Highway (in the Yukon) back in July. Seems that rough road caused at least one ground to begin malfunctioning.
Anyway, the bad ground would not let the head lights come on, but at the same time, the current was apparently back-feeding through the Bright/Dim indicator light as well as the signal light indicators (Jetta cluster in my Vanagon).
So, after removing and re-setting all those ground connections above the fuse/relay panel, the problem appears to be solved! _________________ '84 Vanagon Tin-top, ALH TDI. 1989 Tin-top

With my brother in town we tackled a few minor projects.
Compression test. Just because.
New Spark plugs
Fixed a small vacuum leak
Fixed all interior grounds
Fixed some wiring to led DRL's
Installed new Rockford speakers in front
Fixed the sliding door
New seals on door handles
Bled the brakes
Replaced side markers
and least but not least; recoded all doors to one key!!
I think that is it... |

Moved it out of the man cave, to have it put on a lift @ a friend.
Showed another guy the installation, and how the subarugears set fits into the whole setup seamlessly. Drove around the building there a couple of times ....nice.
Put it back into the stable afterwards, connected the batteries to the automatic charger ... made some notes on stuff I need to tackle ...
but not this weekend, next.

TUEV is done -- no problem on that.
Actually ... I was so happy about it, that on the crusing after the TUEV i tried a burn-out. Worked a couple of times -- but then, there really in the hillybilly area around the Town (street about the same size as the car, 30cm on left and right side left), before the barn of a couple of farmers, I got really ambicious ... AND: there, in front of these guys, I broke something on the drivetrain.
Captured the weakest part ("Auslasswelle"). But Todd had already a replacement for that, so the fix was pretty fast.
since them: everything fine and now the winter is used to work on a couple of other stuff @ the Dehler ...

Installed passenger swivel using baywindow swivel base. Tester approves. Odd that my factory full westy didn't have it to start, but the bonus is that my 6'2" frame fits better in the lower driver's seat

Well... I guess I got this thing out of the donor. I did have to move Flossie out of the garage to get this in, so at least she was involved to some degree. Its gonna be a long long process, but now I have a spare 2.1 WBX AND a EJ22 for that inevitable time in the future when my original 2.1 with 276,000 miles does need something major. My kids and their friends were terrific help. They thought it was fun to help get this thing out!!! No guarantee I will put it in Flossie, but it certainly will go into something eventually -- Either my Ghia or my Notch would love it too Its just awesome to have a few options. Now I got to get the harness out!
Cheers!

The harness harvest did take exactly as long as Mick Longley's timeline describes on his how-to pages. Thanks again Mick!!! I see why all the conversion people charge so much. Kind of like the canvas, I certainly wouldn't take the job for under $1000 if I were being paid to do it. Canvas install OR harness removal. But, here is my fun little pile, including spare 2.1 WBX long block, 091, EJ22 and Subi harness. Good to have the harvest behind me. Strangely tho, I am looking for the next Legacy already... More damn projects ahead than I can probably do in a lifetime, but hey, I can dream big!
