After the last owner of my bug so carefully downgraded the Doghouse fan cowl to an older one. im thinking of putting the right cowl into it, I have a 1972 beetle and I have bought the right cowl and front breast plate with the extra hole for the oil bath air filter for the swap but I have more questions.

First being is the fan and vents inside the older cowl compatible with the doghouse or is that something I need to hunt down

Second I know there is a front breast plate thing as well is that something that needs to be changed or is that left the same from the change of cowl

And third is there anything else I am missing in parts I just have a new oilbath air filter to install along with the doghouse cowl and new breast plate with the right holes

I know the whole plates and stuff are mega important due to the heating system having the ability to leak CO2 into the cab when you use the heater, so im kinda spooked about messing up or missing parts and leaving my bug half deconstructed while looking for new parts.

1. you need a doghouse fan because it is a different shape. I believe the Tflaps and linkage is a different shape too because of the cooler sticking out the back.

2. not sure what part you mean..sorry

3. Parts list (from memory):
Doghouse fan shroud and fan
doghouse oil cooler adapter
tin that covers oil cooler (has a seal)
tin that diverts air from oil cooler to transaxle (has a seal)
I just swapped all these parts to a engine last month so everything is pretty fresh in my memory.

Cooling fan is same shape, but wider than the 29 mm 1500/1600 SP cooling fan.

DH started out with 33, went to 34, and finished up with 35 mm. Bigger is better cooling.

Measured as below between the discs that make up the fan body.

DH lower pulley was biggest since 1961, at 7" measured at outside rim. Bigger means more fan RPM to crank RPM. More fan RPM means more cooling air pumped over the engine.

Thermostat linkage is same, just has extra spacer pieces to clear the DH cooler.

For #2 I was being told there is a seal and piece of metal inbetween the firewall and the shroud that probably needs to be replaced

Those last 3 are things that I need would it be possible to get pictures of those?

Hi. I'd like to inquire as to what engine case you currently have in your new '72? With you now desiring to install the '71 and later fan shroud and its related components, it is kinda important to know what engine case you have. The selection of the oil cooler seals and minor mods to install these parts if you in fact have a '69, or '70, and older engine case. The identifiers would be engine letters under the gen stand and if the engine case is a single or dual relief case. Look on the bottom of the case, drivers side. You should see a large screwdriver slotted plug near the oil pump area. If a dual relief you should see a similar plug near the flywheel side of the case.
Rational here to see what engine is in the car, its current condition, meaning compression, etc, prior to buying 200-300 in parts.
Hope this helps, Bill.
