I have a 1970 standard beetle and for some reason I'm having trouble with my brake lights. They work "properly" but when the brake pedal comes all the way up the brake lights come back on again. I've gone over as much of the rats nest wiring that I can but can't find out why. If you depress the brakes a little they turn off, then when you actually get on the brakes they turn on. Any ideas?

That is weird. The only explanation for that I can think of is that somehow you are getting residual brake fluid pressure in the master cylinder when the brake pedal is all the way up. The first thing I would check is the fluid level in the reservoir and make sure it isn't overfilled. Also make sure the brake switches are installed tightly on the MC, I suppose a loose switch might be able to cause that problem. Good luck

I'd isolate the wire from the brake switches to the warning light on the dash, see if that corrects things. That dash "warning light" rarely seemed to work as designed.

OK, got it fixed. One of the stoplight sensors was bad. I thought it was a 2 prong sensor only to find out it was a three. It was broken off so clean that I couldn't even tell there was something wrong. Thank you everyone for your help. But my brakes still suck. Different problem, still need to fix.
