|
|
After about 15 years of ownership we sold our 85 westy (that we had the middle seat for, we are a family of 5), due to lack of use etc....
Somehow we are back on the market for a VW Westy, considering either a type 2 or Vanagon. It seems that some models have seating for 3 in the back (74-75?), but most are meant for 4 people.
I like the look of the jump seat behind the front passenger, but it seems that they are very hard to find. I was wondering if a generic jump seat can be installed safely/legally, and still be easily removable if needed.
Thanks!! |

You're right about the 74/75 models that had a full width rear bench.
The Vanagons had the early Weekender with a jumpseat only behind the driver and the later Weekender(Carat and MV) had the 2 folding jumpseats.
I believe someone here has made Land Rover Discovery jumpseats work. They are fairly inexpensive and easy enough to get.

A 1980/81 Vanagon Westy P22 (no stove, icebox no fridge) had a 3 person rear bench as well.
Just find a 5th seat for a westy and get a full westy.

can be removed when you arrive at the camp site too |

all the campers are nice, but wter cooled vanagons have advantages in space and power. however you might pay more for one verses a bay window.
as far as legality of adding an aftermarket seat, check with your dmv. many places have seat belt laws, and seat belts are a wise thing to use.
I often wondered if seat belt laws apply to cars that predate mandatory seat belt installation.
use good practices when installing any seat and belts, make sure they are secured to survive a crash.
good luck in your quest! _________________ Help Prevent VW Engine Fires, see this link.....Engine safety wire information

Good points and reminders. The 2 VWs at the top of my list are currently a 75 & 91. I know that seems like a wide and rediculous range, but they really are all wonderful. |

We're leaning that way, it's been redone beautifully and is in mint condition. Unlike the 75 (and a few others) it would need a mod for a 5th seat, but would probably still be the better choice... |

Can the jump seat be left in place while camping? |

Yes. My family of four has a tintop Carat and a Eurovan Weekender (think Carat with a pop top), and they're both perfect family haulers and light duty campers. In addition to a late model Vanagon Multivan I would strongly suggest a '01-'03 Eurovan Weekender as a thoroughly modern, powerful, comfortable, safe and efficient family wagon. We wish we'd of bought ours a decade ago when our kids were younger _________________ Casey--

Here's a link to some folks with a Vanagon Multivan, available in 90/91.
There are two jump seats that are easily removable, the pictures in the link only show one jump seat behind the driver seat.
