2005 Jetta check engine light k wire?

Ok I'm about to trade my 59 bug for a 2005 Jetta. The owner of the Jetta installed a Alpine double din stereo in it and says it's installed incorrectly and puts out a check engine light. Is it the K wire that I read about?
