Hi everyone
So I am trying to figure out the best way to rebuild my front brakes on the cheap. I have a dune buggy project that has a type 3 front beam with the 5 lug drums and two wheel cylinders in each side. I am having issues tracking down rebuild kits for the front wheel cylinders but I am quite sure they are the 7/8 (22.2mm) cylinders. I was told from a friend that a person could dismantle rear wheel cylinders from a 66 and rebuild all my 4 because they only have basically half the guts inside. Not sure if this would actually work. I have looked at the disc brake conversion kits but they just are not in my budget right now. Any help or ideas are greatly appreciated.
I thought maybe some 66 and up stock disc brake assemblies could work on this if the drum brakes cant be rebuilt.

You might not like my answer, but your absolutely best course of action would be to get a type 1 link pin front end and swap it out. It's a far better off road design and you would probably come out ahead $$ wise selling yours to a type 3ers. The worst route to go would be to go discs. Your front end is so light, the front wheels would lock up if you just touched the pedal.
However if you're dead set on keeping the front end, measure the cylinder bores carefully and see if you can match up some rears from Rockauto. _________________ 69 road Bug 2110

^^^^^^ Agree and Agree.
That early T3 brake stuff is possibly the most difficult T3 stuff to find.
That beam looks remarkably good. Sell it to a T3 person, and your T1 beam will be close to free. _________________ Everything known to man has been written.

Not so good news. Just got new lower balljoints too. We'll I will have to look around here in Canada see if someone wants to swap me on a different front beam. Would be far too expensive to ship something like this. I may just try to rebuild wheel cylinders with rears guts just for the sake of trying. Thanks for all the input!! |
