Starting a new project need some info. Planning on swapping in a 69 912 motor which seems pretty simple, but the owner also would like a type 761 tranny from a 356. Has anyone done this swap? How was the front tranny mount done? Looks like the spring plates need to be changed or modified also since we are not using reduction boxes.

Sounds like they'd be better off selling the Porsche stuff... to someone with a Porsche.... and buying VW stuff for their VW.

Engine... dunno. But there's some tilted discussion in the link below.

Looks like that same trans question died on the vine, here: 356 in a 65 bus

Thanks E. Owner thinks its a great idea and has the porsche stuff and wants to use it. Read the posts, some interesting, some not. The motor swap is easy, but the porsche trans has a different front mount. Looking for ideas on that.

Try doing your research in reverse. At one time I was a 356er and there is quite a bit of information on how to put a VW trans in a porsche. Check the samba 356 forms and also the 356 registry forums.

So with a little cutting and grinding we have the 356 trans and motor in. Cut off the mounts and reshape the little "foot" at the bottom of the trans. Shift rod lines up with coupler. Now to work on trans mount making some brackets to attach to VW mount.

The mounting ears interfered with the frame horns.

I am working on something similar for a trans mount. Trying to use VW rear brakes and straight axles that are on the 356 trans. Spring plates have to be modified.

I love that sebring exhaust. I plan on a Bursch street exhaust. Just finished getting the sheetmetal and engine seal to fit.

Finishing up nicely. A blast to drive lots of good power. Front end got lowered spindles with Wilwood disc brakes and kyb shocks. Added some avus style height adjusters to give some more adjustability. Rear got adjustable lowered spring plates and kybs. Used the 356 axles and the stock drum brakes that got 36mm machined off because of the shorter axle length. Shift pattern was fixed by welding up the shift plate and making the ramp rise the opposite direction. Still sorting out ride height and we have some 58 speedster wheels and tires to try.

Motor is a 912 based 1720 with Solex PII 40 carbs. Heads have been worked a little and using a Dansk sport muffler. Also using a Precision Matters full flow oil system.
