Very nearly brought what I and the seller believed was a barndoor deluxe cab ashtray, only to be informed that it's not as simple as 'the ones with the pointy corners'.
Apparently there is a very similar ashtray that was made for the Rometsch? A rarer car but apparently the majority of ashtrays that are thought of as barndoor. The only differents is there is a slight curve to the lower lip of the edges. Barndoors should be straight.
Anyone else know of this? |

Why would a BD ashtray not have a '211' part number, when (I believe) all 'later' BD parts would have been by default? _________________ the3rdrock.com - …musings, discoveries and postulating, by a restless itinerant in search of enlightenment.

Sorry, that was confusing.
The early rear ash trays (58 and earlier?) have no part # on the back. _________________ How to Post Photos

My 51 deluxe has the same ashtray as in the 51 brochure.
The one pictured above must just be a taxi thing.

Woops! sorry Chris. Got my ashtrays mixed up. The one from my 51 deluxe is this one;
As you predicted. So adds wait to the 51 theory. _________________ 1951 Samba 20-017894

I don't think it's from a Rometsch.

Is that the one from the classifieds last week? it doesn't look like it fits the dash correctly. I emailed on the one last week and the guy said his offers were up to $800 so I wasn't bidding any more on it. If that's it I'm glad I didn't. Looks like it's made for a rounded dash in both directions.. |

The one for sale last week was not for barndoor but was the curved one.
It is not only used on rometsch but also on some Mercedes I think, so is easier to find.
I bought the top area of one for 50€ but even a complete one is not as expensive as a barndoor one.
You can be happy not to have bought the one at 800+ |

Very interesting thread
One additional question - The rectangular hole in the dashboard which holds the ashtray: Is it the very same on BD DLX dashes as well as on 55-67 buses?
With a dashboard like this I hope you forgive me that I really need to ask that question ... everything is crispy and rotted away ... especially all metal close to the middle windscreen pillar

Hi, no the hole is a different size for the ashtray. The later 55 on ones are slight bigger and do not fit in a barndoor deluxe dash. On the dash itself on a later bus you also have a recess each side for the spring clips to pass through which is not there on a barndoor dash. _________________ Austrian Kohlruss Deluxe

Nice. That's the 51 style ashtray. The mount is Deluxe dash only. The rear ashtray then slides in. _________________ 1951 Samba 20-017894
