Even after degreasing the Magnesium VW case multiple times, it still can look like crap.
Want to get a brighter and more uniform look?
First step, make sure you have a few hours before the wife/girlfriend gets home, then see in my 1 minute video:

Props for having the air hose accessible in the house! Who needs to sweep/vacuum, just open the front door and blow all the dirt out! |

BTDT works great, I had issues with foaming sometimes (Simple green), tried citrus degreaser and it ate all the rubber seals and killed the machine, find the right stuff and it'll be magic. I found the dishwasher detergent darkened the metal significantly, maybe certain brands work differently?
I just disabled the timer so it never drained and remained in wash mode. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

I did that with all of my engine tins except the fan shroud in the dishwasher at a rental condo when I lived in Maryland. My wife knew about it too! And I saved our portable dishwasher when we built our new house and had hot & cold water and a drain plumbed to our garage just so I could use it for parts washing. _________________ "Just $99 down and $64 a month for 36 months buys you a brand new Volkswagen Beetle!"

The cascade with bleach works really good! Use the prewash and normal wash, it was almost 3 hours in my dishwasher _________________ [email protected] MPH 1/4 Mile & 8.1 @ 83.7MPH in 1/8 Mile with Mild Type 1 VW Mag Case 2234cc commuter engine in stock weight bug w/only .491 total lift(CB2292 Cam), 42x37 heads, 48idf's, Street tires, Belt on, Mufflers, Pump gas, video of the run here: https://youtu.be/M3SPqMOKAOg

Three hours for a 20 minute job no thanks, it looks cute though. We've always gone to local coin op car wash used the wand and high pressure. Wear safety glasses. Oven cleaner preferably easy off cleans the case very nicely and like I said you can be done in minutes not hours. Many machine shops have an industrial type hot water wash with a turn table that rotates the parts as well.
Is this where you got the idea? |

I used to work in a machine shop and yes we did have a nice hot washer that was much like a big dishwasher haha. It was definitely something that used industrial detergent and only took about 5-10 mins.
3 hours in a dishwasher is no big deal. Its not for degreasing, its for brightening the case, as all other ways I tried just made the case darker. _________________ [email protected] MPH 1/4 Mile & 8.1 @ 83.7MPH in 1/8 Mile with Mild Type 1 VW Mag Case 2234cc commuter engine in stock weight bug w/only .491 total lift(CB2292 Cam), 42x37 heads, 48idf's, Street tires, Belt on, Mufflers, Pump gas, video of the run here: https://youtu.be/M3SPqMOKAOg

I forgot what type of detergent they used in the industrial cleaner and there was an additive to prevent flash rust, but it did clean the shit out of engine and transaxles I gotta admit. Cleanliness is all that matters when you are building stuff. The only thing missing here is using a Bosch dishwasher? cheers |

This is best if your dishwasher has a stainless inside...especially for keeping it a secret from your wife.
I use the dishwasher only for the final cleaning. Soda blasting first, then remove all plugs, clean oil paths over and over with rifle brushes and patches with solvent. Then throw it in the dishwasher...if you have a steam cycle use it.
I put mine threw about three cycles |

Yes!! That's exactly what its great for, final cleaning/brightening after all the major cleaning is done _________________ [email protected] MPH 1/4 Mile & 8.1 @ 83.7MPH in 1/8 Mile with Mild Type 1 VW Mag Case 2234cc commuter engine in stock weight bug w/only .491 total lift(CB2292 Cam), 42x37 heads, 48idf's, Street tires, Belt on, Mufflers, Pump gas, video of the run here: https://youtu.be/M3SPqMOKAOg

That's cool man
I've been thinking about doing the same,
I'm just worried that the detergent will be too caustic for the mag case.
Or am i just too scared? _________________ THE BUILD http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php

Hmmm - I just got my engine case back from the machine shop, where it had been dipped and align-bored, case savers installed, etc. Machinist said to clean it again before building, so this is an interesting idea, mine wouldn't have grease on or in it now.
But more likely I'll take to $3 car wash and spray/rinse well (wouldn't want Mrs. Cusser to get her nipples all riled up !!!), then bring home and blow out any passages with compressed air. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. Cascade with bleach dishwashing detergent is not a hazard to your case at all. Remember that its designed to clean plates and eat off them later. _________________ [email protected] MPH 1/4 Mile & 8.1 @ 83.7MPH in 1/8 Mile with Mild Type 1 VW Mag Case 2234cc commuter engine in stock weight bug w/only .491 total lift(CB2292 Cam), 42x37 heads, 48idf's, Street tires, Belt on, Mufflers, Pump gas, video of the run here: https://youtu.be/M3SPqMOKAOg

Does the case look good uniform color now?
Does Mrs Cusser spy on your Samba posts? if so, I will save my next suggestion and let you assume what to do _________________ [email protected] MPH 1/4 Mile & 8.1 @ 83.7MPH in 1/8 Mile with Mild Type 1 VW Mag Case 2234cc commuter engine in stock weight bug w/only .491 total lift(CB2292 Cam), 42x37 heads, 48idf's, Street tires, Belt on, Mufflers, Pump gas, video of the run here: https://youtu.be/M3SPqMOKAOg
