Wiper bases:
Buses use a wiper base with a circular hole.
Example (on left here):
I have seen both VW-logo'd and SWF logo'd bases.
For reference, a low mileage '54 Deluxe thought to be 100% original has wiper bases with SWF logos.

Is there any information to say exactly which type of base was used on barndoor buses? It seems to me from looking through the classifieds that both wiper arm bases were used on buses much later than march 55.
All I can tell is that the base with a round hole has a vw logo, and the other non round hole type is swf.
Is there really a barndoor specific base (apart from the early round arm type)? _________________

Wouter i had a 57 sc that came with the same wipers
I like the way they fit better because off the hole they slide further on the pivot
Have the later style on my 57 panel but looks wrong
56 partsbook doesnot give a from or till date for the basses so dont think there was a barndoor wiper
Maybe pre 52 they used what they had not sure
Had several basses with the vw logo drilled out and at benpon it was obvious you can use anything |

I don't know with 100% certainty but I think all Buses that had the thin wiper arm have bases with the circular hole and not the oval-shaped hole.
I don't think there is a "Barndoor only" wiper base.
For my '55 I chose to try and locate the large SWF logo bases seen above because of the '54 Deluxe I mentioned above.
The logo vary over the years, I am sure of that.
They may even vary within the same year - multiple suppliers of the same part.
volkswouter - Do both those wiper bases have the circular mounting hole?
You did not show that portion of the base. _________________ How to Post Photos

From looking again I think you might be right Everett, although Brendan has these for sale as BD wipers:
These look like thin arms without the round hole _________________

I saw that but do not know if that is correct or not.
It's also possible they are dealer replacements, maybe the oval hole was a universal replacement part.
There is nothing that makes the thin-arms Barndoor-specific since they were used later too.
I have some NOS thin-arm bases that I traded for and they have the circular hole.
They are exactly the same as the ones on the left in this photo (but NOS):

Both the bases on my '52 Bus are this style
Both arms were on my bus when I got it, so it's safe to say they are original. _________________

No problem. I had figured there wasn't a bd specific base in style, but I guess you could argue the logos determine early and late styles _________________

Recap from earlier in this thread: It was changed for 1952 so 50/51 are round and 1952 are flat.
There is some information earlier in this thread but no exact VIN # or date.
If someone else knows the exact date or VIN # this change was made, please post.
I couldn't find anything in the Progressive Refinements VW dealer book for Bug or Bus wipers. _________________ How to Post Photos

A better pic of a polished base. Possibly NOS. I can't say for sure if this is Barndoor, but it sure seems that way. (Might not look polished in the pic, but it is)

I agree with Everett the small round hole are bus only try to put one on a split bug and you will see bus only. The barn door motor you mentioned was high priced I purchased as it was like new inside and came with the hard to find clamp. I used just the base plate and coupler on a 12 volt motor I build. I put a split beetle base plate on it and mounted it to a split beetle frame and NOS pivots and sold it for $500 The linkage rods for a barn door are the same as later up to 64. Only the motor coupler is different. The ends on a passenger rod 1 lays flat to connect to the motor the other points forward to the pivot. unlike later they both lay down the same. |
