Ok my foot well control cable is broken luckily not rusted but still it is broken. What control cable can I use as a replacement?

These are straight up steel wires with barrel clamps on the end. I would measure the diameter of the wire.
You will note...that the connection to the floor lever is a crimped on, bent/hooked piece of steel rod about an inch long. Depending on which control lever it is....you either have two wires crimped into it...the footwell open/closed control....right lever I think...has two wires.
I cannot remember for the left hand control which is heater off an on...but it should be longer as it goes all the way to the back....and should have a wire to control each heater box flap.
I do not know if there is anything similar in a bus or type 3 that may be repurposed.
To me ...this is much like the gas flap repair. Pull out the little metal hook bar described above...the part that hooks to the lever. Cut off the wires and grind the end smooth...then mount it in a clamp or vise...and drill out the end.
Then insert new wires and crimp hard with vise grip pliers.
Or...you can find a piece of rod of the correct diameter....and bend it to shape in the vise and drill the end and crimp it.

i went to the hardware variety store in town abd Ray was right. They had piano wire that will do the job very nicely. I will be able to fix the bent controls in the westy now too. Thanks Ray! _________________ 1982 Westy, 1974 412 Variant... Yes, Aircooled's are great! Oh and I do have modern computer controlled vehicles too, but I just don't care about them. |
