hi I have a 1981 Scirocco S Make I, 166k, it runs great and is tuned correctly etc. a daily driver (not a racer).

However, I would like to have a smoother and quieter ride in regards to engine vibration and noise. Even when my motor mounts were brand new, i felt they were inadequate.

I currently have "stock" motor mounts, and have about 50k on them since they were all replaced.

The motor in the Scirocco S is a 1.8L 8V from an 84 GTI .

Can anyone recommend where to get motor mounts / what type that will do a great job in isolating the typical engine vibration, a noticeable improvement over the "stock" motor mounts? I am just looking for a smoother quieter cabin for my daily driver.

thanks
Kurt

New stock mounts are about as good as you can get. I would check the rear tranny mount, as that is the one that will transfer the most vibration to the cockpit. The diesel tranny mount is sturdier and possibly stiffer than the gas version, but might offer some additional isolation in the long run.

A poly or solid mount at rear would be the wrong way to go. I used stock side and rear mounts and a poly snubber at front and never had any issues with vibration into the cabin nor with any ill effects to the exhaust.

The factory mounts, while a weak point, are better than any aftermarket performance ones. I use the diesel one to replace the weaker one used in the gas version. I also fill the open areas in the mount with a piece of hose to keep it from collapsing on itself & transferring the vibration into the chassis. The other method I use is to inject some 3M urethane adhesive into the mount before installing the mount, but it takes a few weeks to cure completely.

The best factory motor mount upgrade is to use the Scirocco 16V passenger side mount. The part number is 533-199-214-A, but it's no longer available from VW. Try throwing that part number into Google (with or without dashes), and see what you find.

Stay away from the Meyle brand. It's hard enough to do it one time.
