I've talked to one guy who had one and have seen a couple pictures of them, but I haven't heard a whole lot about them. Does anyone know how common they were? I'd love to be able to track one down at some point, and I'm pretty sure they were a VWoA accessory to probably push sales. Other than that, no clue...

I have one that I occasionally display on the hood of the bug on the left. I bought it on eBay about ten years ago. It was NOS and MIP- made here in the US- by a firm in Portland, OR if recall correctly. Now where did I leave that original package...?

If I come across it- I'll offer help.

I remember a fellow on here selling them like 5 or 6 years ago both in the checkered flag and formula vee styles. I was all set to buy them but missed the boat at the last minute. He had a bunch of em too.

There is a photo of the Checkered BIB in the 1972 Volkswagen Accessories Brochure.
The Checkered Bonnet, White with Black Racing Stripe (Formula Vee), Black with White Racing Stripe (Formula Vee) were distributed by Pacific - Italia or Performance Industries.

Ive got one on my super. I bought it a few years ago from a guy at Busses Nowhere Near The Arch. He had a few of the checkered styles, and a few that were plain white with "formula vee" near the hood handle. Ive got the original packaging around somewhere. If I wouldve known how often people are looking for these, I wouldve picked them all up... He only wanted like 10 bucks each... Mad

Good Luck! Cool

Any Upholstery Shop could build something similar.

The cost to make would out weigh what you would spend to find a Vintage one : Vinyl, Fitting, Felt Backing, Mounting Hardware...Expensive.

Checkered Bonnet would have to have Vinyl, Silk Screened to last, Screen, Ink, Artwork and all the above...Very Expensive.

Keep Looking on theSamba Classified, someone might pull one out of their Showcase "For Sale".

Mine too- thanks for providing pic. I searched for a picture of my car donning one- can't find a digital copy. Doesn't fit perfectly- but looks good on there.

Thanks for that pic, I actually have a set of those plates and wondered where they came from. They are made of carboard.

I don't have my checkered one mounted to a car- but it adorns my crazy parts display.
