|
|
Hi all
I just installed my first split case tranny with my first 36hp in my 56 oval. I tried to mate a 1963 tranny with the 36hp but 4th was to tall.
I was told the split case tranny is the way to go. Now it seems the split case has a taller 2nd gear then the 63 tranny. Is this true? It takes longer for the rpms to raise when shifted into 2nd. But felt ok when the 63 tranny was installed.
So are the 2nd and 3rd gears taller in the split case then the 63 tranny?
I was able to take off quicker in 2nd when I had the 63 tranny.
Thanks for any info or help |

The '63 transaxle, provided it was from a Bug, has lower gears in all 4 gears. You are now about 8% taller in 2nd and about 7% taller in 4th. The split case has a slightly lower final drive ratio, 4.43 instead of 4.38, but is taller in all 4 gears. Stuffing the 40 horse Bug box in front of a 36 horse in an otherwise vintage ride is not uncommon.
Most split case boxes are 3.60, 1.88, 1.22, 0.82, first through fourth.
The 40 horse Bug box is 3.80, 2.06, 1.32, 0.89, first through fourth. _________________

Yes the trannsmissins are from bugs.
I did notice that the bug would slow down at the slightest incline and not able to pull in 3rd gear with the 63 tranny. Now I can climb a bit better in 3rd gear on a slight incline with the split case tranny.
How can I bruise a bit better with higher gears then with the lower gears? |

I've heard that there is a one year only trans with better gearing, 1961 is what I was told.
Anyone know the gearing of the 1961 tranny for a bug? |

Sure it is a standard 63 tranny? You should have higher rpms at given speed with the 63-tranny, and not slow down faster. A 1500 tranny from 67- would be near perfect match for a split tranny, in 4. gear.
A 36 hp got max hp at 3400 rpm, 40 hp at 3800 rpm. And max hp at max speed.
This is what I have calculated out of VW's info (100km/h is 62,5 miles/h):
A 36hp will have 3150 rpm in 100km/h
A 40 hp and 1300 SP 3300 rpm
A 1500 3200 rpm
A 1600 3080 rpm (swing axle, not common in the US?) _________________ I got a historic car, every scratch got a history...

Thanks for the help and info.
I do believe the 63 tranny was original and not modified. Came out of a stock 63. It shifted pretty easily and nicely |
