Did lots more work to JB's sick 61 bus... narrowed rear end 3", raised steering box 2 1/16", and installed some matt white widened smoothies...
marked torsion housing for the cut
cut with plasma cutter
after removing 1.5" from tube, in position for welding... exact angle and position as it was before, just narrowed
welded into place
removed 1.25 inches from bottom of trans carriage, then welded flat 1/8" steel for strength and extra clearance
marked cut lines to raise steering box
steering column obviously too high after box raise... took 2" out of shaft and outer tube
much better...
got in some wide stock steelies... needed some proper matt white paint
also, had to cut old upper shock mount and make custom mount that is 1" in and 1/2" up from stock...
This is pic of Huffy after cutting lots of metal away from rear tub areas and under front seats... next is to build custom tubs for front and rear... overall, from my calculations, we have lowered her 12" from stock... and she still has a quality ride...

Looks good.
Seems like a big raise on the steering box what did you do about the floor? |

we have cut a small clearance hole in floor in front of gas pedal... we will be making a custom dome-shaped patch to weld in when we weld the floor tubs in. This bus has a 2 inch raised beam, so everything has been a one-off piece under floor... custom drag link, brake lever, shift rod, etc... so much work, but as low as this bus is it has retained maximum geometry compared to traditional narrowed beam.

Hey man, I ended up finding this thread in my hunt for a proper means of lowering my 66 more.
I was just wondering: with the 4.5 inch drop plates you've fabbed up installed on a car with swing axles, how did everything hold up? I mean, the pictures you've posted look absolutely tits, I'm just wondering how well everything can stand up to that kind of abuse. From the sounds of it, you were able to drive everything around without it fear of anything failing.
Thanks in advance, and keep up the good work. |

The beauty of drop plates is that, when installed correctly, your VW suspension operates exactly as VW intended. Only difference is the axle is higher, resulting in a lower stance. Add some shorter shocks and enjoy the ride. It's far more dangerous and potentially damaging to your car to lower the rear by repositioning stock spring plates and losing the preload on your torsion rod. Lowering your car that way also produces toe-in due to spring plate being too short at the hub when repositioned. Drop plates allow for toe adjustment just as vw intended. _________________ 1969 Riviera "Ethel"
