Went t a friends anniversary party last night held at a farm in the wilds of west Cornwall. Got talking to the farm owner about all things, eventually cars. "I love the 356" he says.
"Who doesn't" says I. "I love the Karmann Ghia".
"Oh, I've got one of those in the barn over there"
1972 RHD. He bought it 3 or 4 years ago from a Solicator friend who breaks up estates after a death. It's not a 356 but it is "pretty and a bit interesting".
It's insured and roadworthy with an MOT. Gets used a few days each year in the summer.
Clearly a car that would need a lot of money throwing at it to be A1 but the owner is just going to keep it going as it is.
And it is not for sale.
Surprising what you bump into unexpectedly. _________________ 1958 coupe |

Yikes, that monstrasity is practically in my back yard (actually in a neighboring county). Need to keep my 72 away from it.
Wonder if it will make an appearance at the spring Circle Your Wagens VW show in Sevierville TN this year? _________________ 1972 Karmann Ghia, the Dragon slayer.... |

I spent the past two weeks visiting my son who is in the air force and stationed at Nellis Air Force base outside of Las Vegas. While going out for lunch at a Buffalo wild wings we spotted this Ghia in the parking lot. Check out the engine.

Indeed!
If the little bits of the former rear window's bottom corner sheetmetal that still remain don't tip you off to that fact, ...
... then perhaps the fact that the top of the windshield frame appears to be missing completely may just convince you.
The seller does also indirectly allude to the fact that it may be a homemade "convertible" (a.k.a. "hack job") when he references the current lack of a soft top in his description:
The Seller wrote: |
Pretty nice Karmann Ghia convertible. I drives pretty well, but needs someone who has more time than me to give it some TLC. The brakes have been replaced, and the front tirerods. It does NOT have a soft top, so one would need to be purchased, or contracted to be made. Please email me all other questions or if you'd like to come see this little beauty. |
My guess is that the title will hold the final proof - those three letters "CPE" in the "Body Style" box.
(... although on occasion legitimate mistakes have reportedly been made when those old titles were originally issued.)
Any way you look at it, the $6,500 asking price is much more than that Ghia is currently worth.
If we can't trust the seller about that Karmann Ghia being a true and proper Cabriolet body, then how can we possibly trust him when he tells us that he is a good driver? |

That would be a great donor body for someone in the Midwest that has a mechanically sound, titled rust bucket with a salvageable pan. |

Heard about a 73 vert, described by the owners wife as a basket case. About all I saw good were the nose and hinge pillars. Had rhino-lining on pans, which was all that was holding the pans together. Felt like wet cardboard. Sad to see one so far down the road. Heater channels, rockers, lower quarters, package floor, all gone.$500 with some of the parts, 2 good doors etc., not sure if I would take it for free, but maybe part out a few pieces. Looks better than it was! Photos of the "good" side:
