|
|
So... my 1968 convertible body was separated from the chassis for about 5 years... I made custom brackets to make sure that the body didn't fold at the door... but over time it must have settled...
Everything looks straight and the door gaps are all even (however this could be the work of the body shop building the door edges to make the gaps even....
however today I installed the door guts and striker plates and both are off...
It looks like if I were to place a 1/16-1/8" shim behind the striker plates then the doors will most likely close properly...
Any suggestions here? Should I shim them out or is there some sort of adjustment?
thanks! |

thanks! that helped...
Well... it looks like the gap at the top is a little big... now... I think that I actually never installed the bolts on those two spots... I'll have to pull off the rear wheels to see if I put them in behind the wheels but it looks like they are missing inside the car... In this pic it looks like I'm missing the two bolts... am I correct?? If I am missing the bolts them I'm probably missing the shims too
See the pics of the bolt / shim parts I found in my spares bin... is this what I need? (I have all the other original bolts too if needed... see pic... I put in all new ones to the pans)
What should I start with?? just the rubber block? Are those metal shims only needed over time if it sags more?
thanks!
also, what are these holes for? are they for mounting the death heater?

The door striker plate removal, installation and adjustment is very briefly described on page A63-1 of the 1960 VW Karmann Ghia Shop Manual - Body Section that can be found under the Technical tab at the top of each page here on The Samba. |

thanks!
ok... so i propped it up and pulled the wheels
i looks like the 2011 version of myself forgot to do something back in 2011 before mounting the body... something pretty important actually..
i didn't put in any of the front or rear bolts or spacers...
it looks like i need all 6 bolts with spacers.. good thing i caught this!!
i ordered the spacer blocks and will post some more questions once i get them here
here's some pics... i forgot spacers and bolts up front and both bolts in the back and spacers...

is this right for up front?? do i need those rubber spacers wil lip on sides on top and bottom? is the order right?
is the bolt an m8 or m10? how long should it be?
can i just go pickup bolts at the hardware store?
is it ok to use stainless bolts or do i need a special grade /type of bolt?
how tight should these bolts be ? torque spec?
for the rear it looks like i just need 10mm or 17mm rubber spacers as needed to ensure the door gap is correct
