I noticed CB has added a 1904cc Gas Saver kit to their Builder's Choice engine kits. Has anyone built one of these or have any opinions on this kit?

It's just an engine. There's no magic in there. You could find out the specs and build with whatever parts you choose. The upside of the kit is that the homework is done for you. Just assemble.

I wonder if a Bug would be more drive able with a longer stroke and smaller pistons. Say 82x85.5 B. a little less ccs, but possibly more bottom end to move the vehicle through that final gear easier.

I mean more go with less pedal. Not driveability. I'm thinking a longer stroke/similar cc engine will develop more torque in the 3000 rpm range than the 74 crank.

82 or up to 86 x 85,5 or up to 88 mm bore has been done plenty. And the end result is still the same, - for street engines, not the best set up, due to a very uneven the power/torque curve. For race engines with limitations in bore it is a solution it is a different matter.

74 or 76 x your choice of bore can work very well.

Here we see the problem with dyno data (real or software) versus real world.

An undersquare (or just squarer than stock in our VW case) engine can perform well when torque and economy are the goal if it is built correctly, but the WOT curves are not what are desired for drag racing which is what Alstrup is noting. They are even better for constant speed applications such as aricraft and stationary engines.

The throttle response at lower engine speeds is certainly better when you get it right.

Low end torque and fuel economy are my primary concerns. My current plan is to build the small-bore stroker motor from Aircooled.Net's mileage engine article, but the simplicity of CB's all inclusive kit is very appealing.

Would be So tempting to spend 30% more cash and get 100% more Torque/Power With one of the larger kits.

I'm just thinking about it all right now anyways. A new engine is expensive.
