far as i know yea that means it is time for a new trans. although you can try checking the trans gear oil level, shifter coupling, and shifter bushing where the shifter goes into the rod.

Popping out of reverse is usually caused by a life of being shifted into reverse while the car is still moving. Reverse is the only non syncro gear, and they get abused. Depends on the year, but most have a brass shift fork.

OK, if you have a '72, and it is the original trans, then you will have the steel shift fork. This means that the reverse idler gear is worn, along with its mating gear the 1st-2nd sliding gear. This is a major repair.
Start saving your money for another trans, if you don't find an external problems.
I rebuilt VW engines and trannies for 15 years.

hey russ my 72 sometimes when i shift to it won't lock in so i have to do it twise sometimes. i am using an empi shifter if that helps any. once in though it has never poped out nor has it in any other gear.

You don't want to know my opinion of Empi shifters, or any aftermarket shift for that matter.
Like I said, I rebuilt engines and trannies at the dealers for 15 years.
