`m in the proces of having my car repainted from bare metal. The colour is to be L30 Königsrot, a dark red hue.

From the past I`ve seen lots of almost pink looking cars that once were red and shiny because the sun had faded the paintwork.

Is clearcoating the way to go? How many layers?
Any other advantages/disadvangtages?

Most modern paints have better UV protection than older paint. Fading takes much longer than it used to. If you are going with base/clear paint then by all means clear it. 3-4 good coats is plenty. If you are spraying it with 1 step..then dont clear it. It really depends on the brand and kind of paint how many coats of clear to use.

My car was painted with PPG Deltron single stage and even though it's kept in a garage, this is what it looks like after 7 years.

The color is L31A African Red.

If you use a high solid clear, ie PPG 2002 or 2021 and the high solid hardner DCX 61 you only need 2 coats to achieve the recomended film build. I would put 3-4 only if you know you will be sanding and buffing.

I`m going to talk with the painter over the weekend.

I also thougt about modern paints having a better UV-resistance than old pain.

The clear will maye make the paint to candy-like?
Want that old-look...

Glenn: love that car ! =) my inspiration for many years...

Clear adds the gloss to basecoat/clear coat paint. 1 step has the gloss built in. Candy paint is a whole nother thing. If you are interested in candy paints check out house of colors website. Lots of nice candy colors.
