A friend of mine just bought a 65 beetle with fake whitewalls. They are whitewall inserts that insert between the tire and the wheel. Has anybody seen these or better yet know where I might be able to get some. They look great. You can't tell they are fake unless you physically peal them away from the tire. I would like to get some for my 71 Super. Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks

I have 2 sets of them. One's on my 71 Super forsale here on thesamba. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=210456 The other set I'm going to keep for another project. They're neat. I saw a set on thesamba that were for redline inserts. I'd love do dig up a set of those in 15in. if anyone knows where to get them.

Herbie3rivers,
I just wanted to say WOW! That is a great looking 71 Super. I just bought my 71 Super about a month ago. It too is Clementine. The portawalls look great. Do you have radials though? I hear the portawalls aren't really good for radial tires. Also, was your headliner, visors, and rear view mirror originally white? I am going to replace my headliner and wasn't sure to go white or black. The carpet, seats and door panels are all black but my headliner is white (not sure if original or not)

port-a-walls will kill your tire walls. If you want to be cheap, just spray paint on some white walls...

all kidding aside, I have run fake ( porta walls ) on almost all of my VW's over tha last 18 years ( more or less )
and all of my tires are radials, driven ALOT of miles, and I have had no problems with 'em, or with the side walls.

whats the story on the side walls?
school me.
Confused

I had a set of 15" fake white walls on new radial 165s. The side wall of a radial flexes while the hard vinyl WWs don't causing the outside edge of the WW to wear a groove in the sidewall. I had to junk my new tires after just 50 miles, they had a 1/8" deep groove cut in them. If i had gone on a long trip i would have blown at least the rears!

Thanks guys; You were right. I looked at my friends 65 with the portawalls on the radials and the sidewalls on his tires had grooves in them. Needless to say, I pointed it out to him and he is having the portawalls removed tommorow and probably having to replace tires too. That's why I ask the Samba gurus. It is good to learn from others experiences.

There was a Beetle at the Bug-o-rama, with a set of those inserts, they were all tattered apart, with chunks missing, and almost falling off! I'm sure they look cool when new, from a distance, but damn, know when to say when!

It's the twenty foot rule. They look decent when they are first put on, but the first time you curb them or the start to get wavy, time to throw them out.

I put a set of these on my '64 earlier this spring and haven't had any trouble. I think I paid around $50 total with shipping from eisparts.com. They have 14" and 15" models with a 2" wide whitewall. They went on real easy, just make sure that your sidewalls are real clean and that you insert them far enough under the rim or they'll come off. It's certainly not the best solution to some great looking tires but its affordable.

Good luck!
