drooping mirrors on '84

The outside mirrors on our '84 Westy aren't doing so hot. They won't stay where you set them. A couple of bumps or closes of the door and they drop so I'm looking at the rear tire.

I haven't really looked at the mirrors yet, but is there an easy fix to this?

Ahhhh yes! The old "Drooping Mirror" predicament...

This is actually a problem I've just dealt with myself. In my opinion, you have two options: Remove and tighten the mirror... which will work temporarily. Or spend the $40 bucks and replace both of em and be done with it.

To Tighten The Mirror
1. Remove the mirror from the door by unscrewing it...
Use an 8mm socket and tighten the nut underneath...
but be cautious of over-tightening... (I've already snapped one off)
Re-secure mirror.

This technique worked for me for awhile, but then it loosened up again.
I ended up just buying two replacement mirrors from Bus Depot ($24.95ea) and had them installed in a matter of minutes.

There is more debate and info out there on this than you can imagine.
Go to www.vanagon.com and search the vanagon mailing list for posts.

Couple thoughts though.

My brand new German mirrors from BD sagged right out of the box and required tightening.

Next time I buy mirrors I am going to get a set of electric mirrors. They bolt right on, you don't have to wire them if you don't want to, and you can adjust them by manually pushing on the glass. They won't move on you at all.

There was a set on here a little while ago and the guy wanted $125 for the, well worth the money if you ask me.

How would one go about wiring it in? What fuse do i go to, etc... I might just do this on my 85

I've never done it, but I have read that it is a no brainer. The vehicle is already set up for it, some just came with the option and some didn't. I will have to consult my wiring diagram when I get home tonight for fuse info. Sometimes when you see them for sale on ebay or here on thesamba they come with a complete harness so it is just a matter of running the wires and putting the switches in.

Ok, I got a little more info.
Power mirrors came as an option on 86 and up vans.
They all got their power through fuse #12 which up to VIN G 105 000 was a 15A fuse, and from VIN G 105 001 was a 20A fuse.
There is a very good schematic of these in the bentley starting on page 97.183.
The later VINS used a bigger fuse because they ran a few more things off that circuit.

I don't see any reason why you couldn't retrofit these to an 85. Just take power from the fuse box somewhere and run an inline 15A fuse. These mirrors also have heaters that can be wired into your rear window defroster switch. Cool stuff.

My only question is where they mount the switch for adjusting them.

Of course as stated before, you can just mount the mirrors, leave the electricals out of it, and adjust the mirrors manually.

cool, i read some info off the vanagon.com archives, and the switch already has a hole in the door, all you have to do is cut the vinyl and pop it in Smile Looks more and more tempting by the hour...plus I know a breaking yard that has an 87 with power mirrors. I'm set! Very Happy
