|
|
I am about 18 months into my first full body off resto - Euro/German/Aussie looker ragtop project. It started out life as a 63 hardtop before I grafted in the Golde ragtop section and then performed all rust repair, panel work, paint prep and application as well as colour sanding.
I applied the base coat clear coat paint in a garage (ventilated with box fans and surrounded by plastic to cover walls, ceiling etc). Orange peel ensued but was quickly remedied with the colour sanding!
I am pretty happy especially considering it was quite a difficult colour to apply (a dark metallic with a slight hint of pearl)...managed to sort out my tiger stripes which occurred at first until I sorted out my gun settings/pressure/tip distance from panel etc etc. Anyway, I'll post a few pics but the full details of the paint is here:
http://www.netspot4u.com/~manxclub/gallery/album192
and the full project progress (type IV, 4 wheel CB discs, etc etc) is here:
http://www.netspot4u.com/~manxclub/gallery/album95
Here is how it started life:

...and here is how it currently stands (just starting reassembly):
The color is deceiving depending on light - at times it is very olive, other times the gold really shows, in shade it looks almost gray (better use US spelling I guess).

Thanks gents....
bloke refers to a male - eg. "did you see that bloke's mullet, it was a Barry Crocker (shocker)?" - meaning, "did you see that man's 1980's hairstyle, it was very ordinary"
but mate refers to friend - eg. "my mate let me borrow his karmann ghia for a cruise on the weekend" - no explanation required, he must be a good friend to let you borrow his restored kg!
Hopefully I might get the engine back in today after work, see how it goes!

I think you've done a great job. Wish that I was as far along as you are on my project ghia. Did you make your own body dolly to roll around in your shop? I was thinking about a body-off restoration but thinking it's too much sugar for a nickle, so to speak. but you've done a great jobv considering what you started with! _________________ VW's Are Like a Box Chocolates. Now I got it, thanks mate. Take that back, in America mate could mean sexual partner. Lets just say bud or something |

Yep it was really quite easy as long as you have an angle grinder (9in helped to get the cuts straight - or metal cut off wheel (like a drop saw) is even better) and welder (I used a mig), it is a piece of pi$$ Not hard at all.

But this is my first time for a full respray, plus first time with bc/cc system, plus first time with metallic which was interesting to say the least!
Engine slid back in nicely yesterday (removable rear apron makes it simple). It will slowly start to look like a car again soon!

2L yes, 914 no. Its just a 2L type IV out of a kombi, with 71mm stroke and 94.5mm bore (just oversize). 2L heads with 1800 valves (slightly larger than standard 2L but not as big as 914 heads - and slightly different combustion chamber design).
Should be nice and torquey but not that fast as it will be pretty heavy with all the sound deadening, roll cage, stereo system etc etc. Once the new car blues are sorted out I'll be keen to run it down the strip to see what sort of times it can run. Probably 15-16secs at a guess but who knows?? |

A super restoration. Just goes to show what a lot of patience and time can produce. Ever think of restoration work as a full time job? |

Thanks for the kind words.
bkrag63 - Anthracite gray (L469) was the original colour of my old bug - I still love that particular hue...a bit bland, but just something about it that I like.
Larry, would love to restore vws full time but unfortunately there are not so many people here in Australia willing to shell out big bucks to pay for the amounts of time you have to spend to get such results. Ah well, I'm happy doing it as my hobby!
Well, progress continues on the 'garage paint' bug - reassembly continues slowly!
