I been reading everyones comments on fitting a berg 5 in an oval. but they all seem to show the later design. Do YOU still have the same clearance issues with the earlier design that has the flat plate rather than the whole intermediate housing????????

If you are putting it in an oval it will require body and pan mods, but nothing beyond someone with good fabricating skills, and patience.

Not sure what you are getting at. The pics I've posted were on a late 56 pan.

Tks for the reply and pics Trevor, really helpful.

Anyone else out there who can tell how they did it? In particular whether a different shift rod was used?

I'm using a 1970 Pan on my 56 so would I still have to use that mounting kit that bolts to the shock towers and would I still have to the body around the luggage compartment?

What you see tied into the shock towers has nothing to do with the B5 install, it is a traction bar/frame horn brace setup.
Yes you will still have to box in the area around the seat bottom cause your using an early body, however you won't have to do as many mods to the pan like I did since it's late model.

Trevor, thanks for the pics
I installed two 5 speeds now, one in a customer's speedster and the other in my daily driver (63 bug).
My real challenge is mounting my other 5 speed in my oval. after looking at the photo of the notch in the pan it makes more sense. Is there a specific year for that type 3 shift rod?
thanks again, I am glad I got around to installing it in my 63. It's fun having a close ratio box and then that stock fifth.

Boy... your testing my memory. Very Happy
I think it was from a 64 T3 but don't quote me on that. I just grabbed it from a pile of shift rods I had in my stash, and it was the closest to the proper length. If you go this route, you will have to drill a dimple on the top side for the grub screw.
Take some pics on your install and let us know how it goes.

Been meaning to ask you Trevor, what make is your traction bar/frame horn brace? Looks nice and beefy.

It's an Airspeed unit.
They no longer make them AFAIK. You may be able to find a new or used one on here www.airspeedparts.com

Bears motorsports in the UK have just started doing a 5 speed conversion. Starts with a new machined mainshaft so is stronger than the Berg set up. Is well made as they do box's for race cars.
Have a look at an alternative.

Are the rest of the parts of their own design, or from Berg?

No the complete kit is Bears own design.
They build race and street box's over in the UK.
The 5 speed kit is Phil's own design. He has been working on it for a while. Has a CNC milling machine that he makes the housing on. The main shaft is a new part so a lot stronger that the berg arrangement.
He does a cable shift sysyem or you can use the nomal shift rod.
Bears idea is 4 race gear ratio's then drive home with a taller 5th gear that allows you to cruise on the freeway.
Happy days !

I will have built 4-speed late model 75-> IRS with quaife, HD sidecover, and stock ratios 3.88.

Maybe later berg 5, now this trans will cost to me about 1600 euros.

Still thinking berg 5, would it be cheaper and almost strong as porsche 901 5-speed with above mentioned parts and case? Especially in the long run?
