Can I hook up a flasher in my 55 so the semi's blink when they are on...or will they just go up and down?

Yes. I did it in my 55 vert. They blink, but stay up.

I think you would need to run a separate wire for the bulb, then hook it up to a flasher relay.
Two things that may happen when you try to power the whole thing with a flasher relay:
1) the semaphore will drop when the power is cut
2) the relay won't be able to handle the big amps a semaphore draws.

Back in the 50s there was an aftermarket accessory add on that would make the light blink but the semaphore stay up. The bulb holder was replaced with a specially made one that had a bimetalic strip and a set of contacts. The bimetalic strip would heat up and break the contacts. Once the cct was broken, the bimetalic strip would cool and close the cct turning the bulb on. Designed right, it would flash at the right frequency.
Anyone know where to get such a device? Is this repro'd?

I have seen semaphores that do that, my friend Jason has a '50 Split that has some of those, I think they are called "Klacker" or "Clacker" or something like that. I know he paid a pretty penny for them- they are flashing, and the are the correct Split "grooved" semaphores.

Yeah, by buddy has a pair of clackers on his 50 split. They cost $2k and were NOS.

I'd like to add flasher relay to let the rear light flash, just as they do on (europe) 1960 beetles. Guess You had that kind of rear lights and turn-signal-switch on all beetles from 55 on. We had semaphores up to 1959 and one year only rear/break/turn-lights.

Get the rear lights to flash would help avoid idiots who try to overtake me cause they think I slow down my old car for some other reason - not seeing my semaphore, when I'm just going to turn to the left... If the rear light would 'flash' then they would understand it, they'r just not looking in the semaphore area for a turn signal.

I like the solid light from the semaphore - why should they flash? To get them to flash by using a normal relay - yes you'll need to add an extra cable to the light bulb - otherwise the semafore would flip up and down an probably break after a while.

So that people recognise them as a turn signal and not a side marker light. Believe it or not, if you show the average person today a semaphore, they don't know its a turn signal.

I agree with Bruce...it seems like you just need to run an extra wire hooked up ,to a flasher....is it harder than that ?

But still they will look at the rear light, where most people expect to se the turn signal on a beetle. Beeltles are still that common so people know were they have their turn signals (ie on the rear light). Nicest would of cource be to have BOTH semaphore AND rear light to be able to flash - but also to be able to turn it off so it appears more authentic when not driving in dense traffic... Very Happy

I have the parking light in the front, the semaphore and the rear taillight hooked up for flashing. The semaphore does not flop up and down.

There is a factory part to make semaphores blink.
the box says "SWF-BLINKMOTOR".
MOTEURS DE CLIGNOTEURS-FLASHER MOTOR
It mounts behind the dash.
I can send pics of mine.

Someone asked you how you have this wired. Did you provide that info or could you? I'm pretty sure I know how to do it, but I'd like to know how others have wired them. Confused

I have semaphores on my '59 Euro Spec Beetle that run in tandem with later front and rear flashing indicators, added to the car in 1962.

The previous owner made a wiring diagram and I've tidied up his notes and have a good clear copy so if any of you would like a copy just PM me and I'll send you a .jpeg. I haven't uploaded the diagram to the gallery because of the 300KB limit.

The system uses 2 flasher units...one for each side...why? probably because it works better with the 6v system. The semaphores stay up and the semaphore light flashes the same as the indicators.

What you will get from me is the wiring diagram without the technical back-up...sadly I'm no auto electrician, but the system works well and has been for the last 10 years.

Seems like nobody out there has a diagrahm....so for now, I hooked the semaphores to an extra 6V battery, and they will work fine 'till I go to the blinkers...
Thank all.......

OK well I've adjusted the size of the diagram so it will display correctly in the Gallery.

The reason I didn't upload it before was that I wasn't sure what category I should put it in.

Anyway you'll find it under Bug- Oval Window. Hope you find it of use Smile
