The water tank in my Westy has long since gone MIA. The other day I noticed a VW fact on the Samba main page listing "Inca Plastics" as the VW manufacturer of water tanks in the 60's.
Major Woody was super kind and sent me detailed photos and measurements of his original tank.
Thanks!

I went on the Inca website and:

http://www.incaplastics.com/w10/10.htm

it appears they still make a tank very close, if not the "same" one as the original. Customer service mentioned fittings could be added (though it seems like it would be very easy to do it yourself). I will post pictures when I get mine.
Just thought others might be interested.

Interesting, I have an og one but a new one would be nice. Don't ever see myself cleaning out or using the og one. I would use a new one though.

Just had a thought. Are walk thru tanks different from non walk thru tanks. My tank is out of a non walk thru and has the wedge shape to it, I am guessing this would be so it could fit around the spare tire well. Being a walk thru doesn't have that obstruction wouldn't it be a full rectangle with more holding capacity??

I think the tank shape was dictated by the supplier. From what I have seen both models had the wedge shaped tank.

Tim thanks for the info. Like you, my '66's tank is MIA. If I ever get around to it I saved the link...

If I'm not mistaken,. the wedge shape allows space for the bottom side of the pump.

Update:

I received my new tank today. Inca Plastics did a great job. Fits perfect, just need to go pick up a few fittings etc... I talked with someone a few weeks ago at Inca, he remembered sending containers of water tanks over to Germany in the 60's....
Neat to see a company still able (and willing) after so many years supply original parts. Almost ready for a cool glass of water Very Happy
Thanks again Major Woody for the reference photos!

The tank used:

http://www.incaplastics.com/w10/10.htm

It was $85.00 plus shipping. The tank arrived pre-threaded for the drain and inlet fitting. It was neat to have the original tank, from the original manufacturer. Also nice to actually drink water that doesn't have "stuff" in it... Very Happy

Just mention the VW from March, I am sure they will remember.

Last year, I bought a pump for my water tank at an RV dealer here in Chico; the employee opened up a large catalogue, I picked out the one that looked like it would fit, and he ordered it. It cost something like $35. It was a good fit but I had to drill one new hole to mount it.

Or, if you are into originality, contact the US Whale Pump rep. They still manufacture manual pumps and have a model that can work for a Westy application. Do a search under Whale Pump USA or something like that, I just woke up and I am too lazy to find it right now. Smile I talked with them on the phone once, looking for spare parts for my original Whale pump (made in Ireland).

that is cool that the tanks appear to still be available. How much work was it to make the tank fit your needs? Pretty amazing that the tanks are still available 38 years after so42's stopped being made!

All it took to have the tank ready for action was a drain valve on the bottom, an elbow on top and a 4 foot piece of hose which runs from the pump to the bottom of the tank..

I coulda sworn my tank is fiberglass.... I haven't had it out in a while though. I know the drain is brass and frozen for sure though..

I know some of them are fiberglass (I have one stored in my garage). It could be that pre 66 is fiberglass and 67 on is plastic. That would go along with the bay window plastic tanks. If so, that is yet one more change for the 67 model!
