Both my '72s have them and they work. I know my baby is still the original working unit...250,000+ miles! Cool

Try taking it to a speedometer repair shop.

IIRC, the trop odometer started as a standard feature in '71 .. I *think* it was an option before that, but I could just be blowing smoke out of my ass. Embarassed

I think it was standard for the USA after some point. Maybe '71 as mentioned.

The earliest I have seen it in that I believe was correct was a '69 Fastback I just sold. It was bought from the original owner and was sort of low mileage so I think it was original.

I did not remove it to check the date.

The speedo and odometer/trip did not work when I got my car. When I did the brakes, I found a broken speedo cable. I replaced the cable, but it still did not work. I took apart the speedo and found that the grease had became hardren (age/dirty) and was not allowing the the gears to turn. I also found that a gear ( for the reset function) for the trip had sled out a little. I cleaned, reset the gear, and relube...works great now.

FYI...the display needle breaks easily...don't ask how I know.

My 71 didn't come with a trip, and my dad's 71 that he had didn't come with a trip, so it must be a 72 thing. Very Happy My 71 has the correct date coded speedo with the 10ths in it, and my wife's 70 still has it's OE speedo in it too. That being said, I had Jim Adney rebuilt the early 72 unit that I've got in my 65 Notch. Cool It works great too, so if you need one done, I'd contact him.

i love having a type 3 and talking to you guys. no one has slammed me for my mispelling of have lol. anyways what is that guy's name here on samba so i can contact him? other wise i am having to guess how many miles to go between oil changes and valve adjustments so obviously being a little over the top i will be doing them closer together than they probably need to be not that is really a bad thing. hey bob if you see this i got into an argument over the use of full flow filter pumps and whether or not they were good. the real argument started when i mentioned that you change your oil more often and you have a lot of miles on your engines. i feel this is a safe way to go on a mild or stock engine. just thought i would pass this along.

hey last time I looked there was one in a squareback at the area 51 yard by mather field. I was going to pull it but there was a kid and his baby pulling something out of a bug and the kid was screaming, I decided it wasnt worth it to me. It looked nice though, as did the car

No, but it's similar. Twisted Evil Mine's a "late" model, has the rear cargo area closed in, and it's currently flat black with white scallops. Pics have been posted in the forums and in the gallery in the Squareback section, or even the link in my signature. Cool
