Hello everybody,
I have a 67 bug, and was wondering what gauge the metal is on the body...specifically the floor of the trunk. A previous owner cut two holes for speaker...and thought about removing the speakers this spring and having the holes filled. Just curious.
Thanks,
Kelly |

I've often wished someone would take a micrometer and measure an bunch of original and aftermarket parts and post it on the net. I'll be buying a micrometer for myself and will publish what I learn.
The only two things I've seen on the net are both on John Henry's pages at thebugshop.org He says that most body metal is 22 gauge and that original bumpers are .090" in thickness.
I think the best thing may be to cut the damaged section out and bring it to your local steel supply person. He should give you cold rolled mild steel about the same thickness as what you bring him. |

ok actual numbers here: 0.9 mm = 0.035856573 20 gauge is .0375 21 gauge is .0343 0.8mm= .0318 22 gauge is 0.0312 so I just actually measured a decklid and you know what? 0.0345 ....The answer is definitley 21 gauge....but since 21 gauge is not readily available as all metal suppliers I have ever seen only stock even numbers....so I personally choose to go bigger. (the only time I have ever seen odd gauge size is on certain jet aircraft made within the past twenty years) |
