New to the dual port engines, and was wondering which was quieter, single quiet pack, dual quiet pack, or Phat boy style muffler.
I know the stock muffler would be the quietest, but that isn't really an option for me.
thanks. _________________ I build complete Westy Style camping interiors check them out here > www.rjcampers.com

The Phat Boy would be the loudest. Depending on how big the engine I would go with the dual quiet pack. |

It's a 1776 with Dual 40 Kads. The heads are slightly ported. _________________ I build complete Westy Style camping interiors check them out here > www.rjcampers.com

Is there big difference between the phat boy and the dual quiet pack?
Or is it minimal?
Thanks again. _________________ I build complete Westy Style camping interiors check them out here > www.rjcampers.com

I have a dual QP on my 74 Beetle. I purchased a A1 Phatboy and took it for a 5 mile drive. When I got home I removed the Phatboy and reinstalled the dual QP.
It was LOUD.

Thanks that just about answers my question.
My 67 Bus currently has the Empi Phat boy ( I bought it that way) and it seems really loud. I am wanting to quiet the noise down so I can at least have a conversation while I'm driving.

How about back pressure? Any of yall checked to see which is best for that? I know there are a lot of "LOUD" exhaust systems that are pretty restrictive! Case in point... A chambered exhaust... it'll bellow like a raped ape and sing a pretty song, but its no good for effieciency. |

I've got a 1776 with mild ported and polished heads, Engle 100 cam, dual Kadrons, 7.8:1 compression and an S&S Header with single Quiet Pack. It sounds really good, yet my coworkers still tell me the car is loud...but quiet packs are about as quiet as you can get. Compared to the Phat Boy muffler the QP is much more quiet...kind of a mellow low frequency sound whereas dual QPs have a nice throaty hush when you get on the throttle. |

Nope... i hit it with some carb cleans so it looked new and sold it. Chuck (aka Growler) bought it. _________________ Glenn

My "Phatboy" muffer is pretty quiet. At idle with the windows rolled up you cant tell its running. Also when cruising you can have a conversation. Keep in mind that there are different types of mufflers used. Mine was made with a Dynomax by Kymco. Glenn's was a straight through muffler like the ones A-1 and AJ Simms sell. |

I ran a 1776 with 1.375" header, heater boxes, stock cam and valves, and dual QP's. It was louder than my 2110 with 1.625", 40X35 valves and Webcam 163 with a hideway turbo muffler. The hideaway is the one that has long tubes that tuck the muffler on the right side in the fender, about $60. I used to run a Dynomax on this car and the hideway quieted it way down to the point I can listen to the Sapphire, it is also invisible from the rear of the car. |

I still like the sound and the look of dual quietpacks. They look balanced from behind. Not like the large lump hanging off to one side.
Maybe they will cost me a few ponies on the street but hey, throw on a stinger at the track were it matters and noise is not an issue. |

The problem with some mufflers and there noise is that the tip exits inside the fender, making it resinate inside the car. I've played with the positioning of the mufflers I've had (cuting and re welding) and having the tip exit outside the fender makes the world of difference. Just my 2 cents, Joe |
