Hi, I have a 1600 dual carb square. Getting it stared is tough, takes a lot of cranking and pumping but once started idles ok. Also while turning over it starts to start up by the 4-5 key turns (attempts to start) and definatly is getting fuel. I think fuel pump is ok because runs smooth, maybe pressure regulator or junk plugs, coil? This is only on start up and takes les attempts thereafter. Has anyone had this problem? What should I start looking for to replace? sorry for the bad explination.
Thanks for all input.

what carbs are you using and is there an electric pump installed? on my engine with an elec pump and ICT's i turn the key till the pump turns on let it run for a few seconds then start it. fires right up everytime. when i first got this car it was hard to start then greg at greg's vw service turned the fuel T so both carbs got fuel at the same time on start up. also i replaced my cap and rotor with some new german parts and that helped out a lot. now it starts better than a lot of new cars Smile give us a little more info on your setup.

thanks for the replies. the car has the original solex carbs and I know it has a mechanical pump. Is it hard to convert to electric? I'm sure that would do wonders.

I would check the points/cap/rotor for wear. Check your spark plug wires and ends too.

Check points/dwell and the timing to make sure they are set right.

Don't need a pressure regulator. You don't need an electric pump and it's not worth the trouble, not to mention the fire hazard if you don't have a way for it to shut off if the engine stops running (say, in an accident).

Is the car a daily driver? If not then yes it could take multiple tries to get fuel to feed the carbs. Do what Everett suggested as well as valve adjust if it's time for that.

Does the car idle smoothly? Does it otherwise drive smoothly? If not and you've done the ignition checks you might want to have the carbs looked at.
