2nd till 32, 3rd till 52, 4th is 30mph on up. This is according to the 1981 manual, I find myself using 3rd allot, I'm never in first for very long, and you can't be affaid to downshift with this little motor. Mine's peppy if driven right, not fast but will keep up with traffic fine. _________________ My Art:

Try this:
1st gear til the engine wont rev anymore, make sure the valves are floating
slam it into 2nd gear....keep the foot planted firmly on the gas peddle, when the engine wont rev any further slam it again into 3rd.....repeat |

The speedometer on my '80 has dots. 1 dot max in 1st gear, 2 dots max in 2nd, 3 dots max in 3rd. I don't always run it so high each gear, but it seems to help on hills. |

Connie, it sounds to me like you're shifting just fine. As long is it doesn't lug the engine when you shift to the next gear, you're OK. I wouldn't use the little red dots on the speedometer for normal in town driving. It's my understanding that those dots represent 'red line' or the 'never exceed' speed for your engine. I do use the dots though when trying to accelerate up a hill and keep up with traffic. Hope you're lovin' your Westy |

To reiterate. VW put little "tic-marks" on the speedo for the recommended shift points for max acceleration. Shift in their general vicinity (from below!) and you will be fine.
