when i changed my oil last (i do it every 1500 miles or so) i found a rather large peice of metal in the oil strainer. when i picked it up it fell apart in my fingers but it seemed large. engine runs fine no knocking, weird grinding noises anything like that. should i be really worried? never seen anything like this before but this is only my second oil change on this car. the engine is a 1600 DP with baby webers and no i do not drive it hard although i do drive it daily.

Hard to say what it could have been...did you pass a magnet over it? that's one way to tell if it was a piece of the case or a piece from an engine component.

It could also be a piece of a piston that somebody forgot to fish out during the last top end overhaul. Sounds like it might have dropped a valve and chewed a chunk out of a piston, and the person repairing it didn't feel it was necessary to split the case, for whatever reason. If everything seems normal running wise, I'd let it ride. If the engine is really screwed, it's screwed whether you rip it apart or drive it. at this point, and it could go a long time. This may sound overly adventuresome, but I don't know how concerned I'd be if it ran fine and didn't leak/ make noise otherwise. Now, if the oil had lots of fine metallic shavings in it as well, THEN I'd be concerned.
