I'd like to find out if anyone can tell me what the correct logo is for my 71SB rear deckllid. I know it's been changed at some point in it's life as it doesn't match the vehicle as equipped and the color change to match orignial pai9nt. The decklid is from an automatic model(it still says auto on lower right side but on left side were logo should be there are six holes - three across top about 4 1/4" apart and about two inches lower there are three holes about 2 3/4inches apart - I'm quessing it said volkswagen and maybe engine size below(it's stock 1600FI U series motor). Anyyone with any info would be helpful so I know what to look for. Also any sources for trim (skinny) on body sides.

as far is I have read, the US models did not have the engine size on the decklid -- maybe it said 'Volkswagen' with 'Automatic'
I know that ISP West sells the body trim, but I have been giving all of mine to Mr.Bubblehead... _________________ póg mo thóin

Blankmange - the holes I'm talking about are on the left lower corner is the and are laid out in straight line paralllel to top and bottom of decklid. Would stock spelled out VW account for this large of spacing about 8 1/2 inches hole to hole on top so logo would probably be about 10 inches thanks for the link on trim though-it's my wife's DD and she wants it back on.
Thanks for your thoughts |

I would have to measure mine, but it isn't parallel to anything, set an angle... _________________ póg mo thóin

Regarding the trim, I have a shitload of it thanks to Blankmange...complete with OG dents!
I bought a new complete set of trim from CIP1 a couple years ago for $70 I think, the upper thin trim was a perfect fit and mirror polished. The lower rocker trim sucked ass though, it didn't fit and wasn't polished or anything. _________________ OGST

If I can get a pickture posted I will for you to see what I meean. Is there a P?N for the decklid concealed inside that might help to id it's origin. I know what you mena about it being on a slant, could the mounting studs be straight across while script writing is on slant. does anyone have a logo off that they could tell if this was the case
Thanks |

I have mine off at the moment and the mounting holes are at the same angle as the script... _________________ póg mo thóin

That's it now to find one. As for the euro input. That sounds right because the car has been in the family nearly 25 yrs. We've had it about 7 yrs My folks werePO and I remember that they said that the their PO bought in germany and shipped back when finishewd on location. They worked for Lucas in Marin County,CA so it's been a Nor Cal car since. Now where to find one now that I know what the heck I'm looking for .Any info on what correct latch on body and door are for the 71?
Many thanks to all for info |

The difference is mine says automatic on other side. I'll get the digicam out and see if I can't get a photo up . My other question is regarding the latch on rear lid mine has large plate and pin with the rubber wedge block on left side and other said to be same vintage I've seen catch appeared to have lower profile I'm missing rubber wdge and door realy doesn't close that well so maybe doesn't fit quite the same if my latch is earlier model or is this no diff issue |

I've seen them in the past with just a bar below the Volkswagen script. The automatic would be on the opposite side then. |

I've seen the new body style cars with the line or bar below the script, usually on cars that were destined for Canada. Those cars had the "Automatic" script on the other side of the rear hatch door.
On European models, they said "Variant" where the bar went, just like the '66- 69 models (US vs. Euro)
I think they started doing the script "on the bias" in early 1971. ALL of those said "Automatic" under the "Volkswagen".
I have also seen some 1970- 71s with the "Volkswagen" and "Automatic" in a straight line, one above the other.
Type 3 badging can get confusing, esp with all of the export/ home market variants (pun intended) thrown in.
I saw one very early automatic squareback, built in late 1967 as a '68, that was badged as "VOLKSWAGEN" on the top, "VARIANT" on the bottom on the left, and "VW1600E" on the top and "AUTOMATIC" on the bottom on the right. It was delivered at the dealership I worked at, and supposedly arrived badged that way. Go figure. It was a fuel injected automatic. I'm surprised they didn't create a special "INDEPENDENTLY SPRUNG" badge for it too, as 1968 Type 3 Autos were the first with IRS. Maybe there wasn't enough room on the lid! _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.
