... if my bus was repainted with ZERO bondo or filler?
i mean every bump on the body could be seen (fixed as good as possible before, of course) ?
its not gonna be a show car, but i dont want it to look like junk.
cause i talked with my dad last night (he's gonna help me with the project), and he said "bondo" ... i was scared.
and, without any bondo or filler, it could get a nice patina (if such thing is possible in the east coast)
and err... just realized i sound like a 12 years old guy talking about my dad _________________ 1964 Turkis Flipseat |

IMO if you're going to paint it, do the body work. A little bit 'o filler is expected. New paint over old wounds looks bad... |

I really know very little, but I believe that virtually any car that needs paint needs some filler. I don't think there's anything wrong with it if you use it correctly. Oh yeah, I probably wouldn't use "bondo" brand filler. Did you see that bus in the magazine (forgot which one) recently that is bare metal? _________________ '74 412 wagon

If you do it up without some sort of filler, it will look like you cheaped out. Every high dollar automotive restorationist usues some sort of body filler. If you have such a huge aversion to plastic filler- find some old fogey that can do lead work. |

If you have the time and patience to learn how, you can do body work without filler. All panels will require access to the back side so you may have to cut out inner sections and re-weld when you are done with your body work.
The most imortant tools are high quality body hammers and dollies, a shrinking disc...maybe a bullseye pick etc. Here is an article that has some information:

And check out my links page for other articles on dent repair.

I like the idea of not using filler and letting the welds show under new paint, providing the welds are good its sort of honest. Even though I like the idea I'd like a smooth shiny bus even better, not like my rusty pile of... |

then use a high quality metal filler after you bang out your dents...don't put it on heavy (try and stay under 1/8" total thickness)...use a pinhole filler/glaze ontop of the filler before you prime and 99% of the folks out there will never know it's been banged up...well done filler will look damn good compared to leaving imperfections (new paint magnifies imperfections)... _________________ Wish List:

ok whoever told you that bondo or plastic filler was bad didn't know what they were talking about. go to a car show, see all those high end street rods that are chopped channeled, sectioned, and lowered....I guarentee that there is bondo on those things. I'd put HUGE money on that. you see, the art of bondo is THIN LAYERS. even if you have to build up a section a little bit, if you are patient and only apply it in thin layers while sanding in between the layers, you'll be fine. I would try to hammer out as many little dents as you can, but a fine coat of plastic filler isn't going to hurt at all. And, if you are going to spend the money and paint your ride, why not do it right the first time, make the body straight and have something that you can be proud of instead of a nicely painted bent up piece of junk
later,
