|
|
hey all. just wanted to share something new to me.
after troubleshooting my classic hurst shifter with
worn out walnut shift knob and worn off chrome
and unpredictable play - i come across this gem:
http://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=ACC%2DC10%2D3566
spread the empi love = )
if you can't get another hurst - this will surely fit the craving!
and you cant beat $40.
i've spent more in troubleshooting and bushings. haha.
later--andrejs[/b] |

Check the classified ads, there is about 20 on there... common aftermarket shifters. Maybe you will find one less then $40. Good Luck. |

true. did see 4 solid pages of shifters.
BUT a) no guarantee they are all for a T3
b) prices for hurst range from 55 to 100
c) hurst no longer supports these products
so i still think $40 for a brand new, readily available, tech supported
empi "hurst style" is a way rad alternative... |

That was the first shifter I got for my baby back in the late '80s. Sure was nice. _________________ Toby http://www.aircoolednut.com/

good to know.
so if my hurst ever dies - i'll swap it for it's modern, more reliable
EMPI cousin with pride!
(and better chrome)
i'll miss the walnut knob though = ) |

Hm, I've got a genuine old Hurst that I used for a couple of years in my Bug, never had any problems with it .. it just worked. Well, after I freed up the trigger mechanism -- it'd sat outside for about 10 years before I got it. Wish I could say the same for the Hurst-style EMPI that I had before it. |

well tristessa - nice moniker by the way - smashing pumpkins reference?
great tune.
anyway. so be the counterpoint.
yes, the hurst has history. fits well in my ride.
i can feel the past in it and it's wear.
hate to give it up, minus the walnut knob being
squeezed on with 9/16" ford washer hose.
(my own custom rig being that the nylon threads were shot. haha)
hopefully the roughness is actually in my shift rod and shift
coupling bushings in fact.
ordered urethane replacements this week.
next week - only time and a good mechanic will tell...

I think Tristessa was trying to say that the original Hurst was of better quaility and more dependable even after sitting outside for 10 years. He can correct me if I'm wrong.
Empi is not the reputable company it was in the 60's & early 70's. The name empi was sold to a company that sells mainly knock off parts made in China. Quality of their parts generally ranges from OK to completely useless piece of crap that they shouldn't have bothered manufacturing.
For an idea of their current reputation see the thread on the new empi catalog in rants & raves. |

The OE shifter in my 1970 Squareback was 12-inches, not 15. I replaced it with one of the EMPI shifters, in the 12-inch length, and it fits perfiectly, just like the original, except that it has shorter throws, very short throws.

Kirsche replies:
Yeah, i got that. which is why i said resultingly that even despite the
wear, i'm trying to hold on to the hurst if not totally worn and checking alll other associated bushings first.
didn't know empi fell by the wayside that badly in quality having become chromed origami in essence. good to know. guess whatever i choose it best be NOS or excellent used from 60's and 70's - like everything else on my ride = )
[even though hursts like mine have been going for $55-100]
later... |
