First, I have to thank Mr.Bubblehead, who donated a Saturday to getting my square running.
And it is, running.... We spent about 8 hours on it, replacing fuel lines, cleaning the fuel pump, replacing injectors, new cap/rotor/plugs/wires. After all that, it fired up and ran like it was supposed to. I also have to thank the previous owner (since deceased) for taking such great care of it -- valves were all in spec, points were practically new, the oil was actually usable (but we changed it anyway)....
Drove it around the block with no front fenders or hood, but we didn't care... hell, we didn't even have anything explode or catch on fire for us, so it was rather uneventful by our standards...
Now I have to finish it, get it registered/inspected/tagged.... _________________ póg mo thóin

Dude, yesterday was a good time. I can't believe how solid your $200 car is! The pans are perfect, the best I have EVER seen. And no one was injured or dismembered, just the shot of gas I took to the eye! You need to post some photos of us cruising the block in your hoodless fenderless ride, so we can show everyone how we roll out here on the Mid Coast! _________________ OGST

COOL! Just install the wrong hood, fenders, and bumpers, and you'll have one up on Mr. Bubbly. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

here are some pics of the adventure yesterday:
driving in the 'hood... without a hood...
all you need to rebuild the fuel system: beer, pb blaster and extra fuel lines
bone-stock FI set up, except for the fuel pressure gauge (left fuel rail, but you can't see it here) _________________ póg mo thóin

I have a couple questions about the engine...on the generator, there is a condensor-looking thing, grounded to the generator, with a single wire connected to the D+ terminal. Also there is an inductive pickup on the #1 plug wire that runs to a small box at the rear of the engine compartment. I am not familiar with either of these, can anyone enlighten me? _________________ OGST

The condensor is for radio noise suppression. If you don't listen to AM radio, you don't need it.
As for the inductive pickup on the #1 plug wire, that is for the VW diagnostic system that is no longer available.
That "box" is where they plug the system in. Lift the cover on it, and you will find all kinds of connections in there that can be useful if you know what each is. A remote start button for one, if the other end of the wire is connected to the starter. _________________ Society is like stew. I think the '72 wiring diagram shows it.
http://classicvw.org/gallery/partsbook?page=3
The orange dots in the '72 diagrams shown here refer to the pins in the connector. _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey
