Does anybody have the image posted sometime back about where to place heart tail lights? Yes, I did a number of searches and it didn't come up. Maybe someone will have better luck than I did.

Thanks,
Shane

Here you go! Very Happy

It's in Metric, but I think you can recalculate the measurements.

I'm sure the above photo is the best reference. 12 years ago I also transferred such measurements from a beat-up original fender from my late '52 to a '67 rear fender. When you have the rear bumper on and level, the bottom edge of the large lens (not the heart lens on top) is just about even with the top of the bumper blade when you crouch down about 10" behind the car and sight the bumper. Same applies to the later "oval"/"snowflake" taillights- but for US cars, the bottom edge of the taillight lens was even with the top of the rear bumper overrider/towel bars. You often see otherwise nicely done ovals or early square-windows at VW meets where the taillights are way too high.

That really bothers me. Especially when someone paid big bucks for a restoration and can't even get the heigth of the tailights correct. Rolling Eyes

You hit the nail on the head. They PAID for a restoration instead of doing it themselves. I'd say most folks who shed some blood, sweat and tears on a resto would get something like that right. Could be wrong... but that's why I'm asking questions. This won't be a perfect resto, as this car was cut up pretty badly, but I'm going to do what I can to get things as right as I can.

Are these measurements correct for regular 'split' window taillights as well?

That would be MUCH appreciated, that's good info to have in one thread. There's alot of these fine points that seem to have 'gone missing'

As promised. Split taillight location as follows. Very Happy

Notice that there is a bulge for the bulbholders.

Cool!

Can I ask how far it is to the bottom of the fender? Or the bumper bracket hole like in the heart diagram?

(IE where do I start to reference those measurements from?)

You start from the upper corner of the edge against the rear apron in 90 degrees 150 mm out and 60mm down for the upper bolthole and another 40 mm's for the lower. Wink

The big hole (16mm) is for the sealing rubber for the wiring.

We need a point of reference for the starting (150 mm) point. The heart taillight uses the top of the bumper bracket and the bottom edge of the fender curve as the reference points. Is that what is pictured for the split diagram?

I guess i've explained it a bit blurry. Yes, the upper left corner with the square is the reference point as you refer to as the bottom edge of the fender curve .

I rewrote the previous post:

I hope you understand me know... Rolling Eyes

Just curious as to why there's 4 holes in the picture for the heart tail lights. I haven't got my hearts yet but from the pics ive seen the bracket only appears to have 2 mounting holes. Are the other 2 just for wiring to the lights???

edit
forgot I was also going to ask if any of you have the hole diameters too
thanks

Thanks heaps for posting that pic, I was wondering how I was going to get the position right, I agree with previous comments getting it right is everything.
My 54 had 60's tail lights on it when I got it - yuck. Its taken 6 months but I think I've finally tracked down some hearts locally, wont be getting them for a little while yet.
Thanks guys

Ok, here it goes. Very Happy

The two holes on each side are for the dots on the taillight rubber. The rubber have two dots that you push into the holes to fix it on the correct place. The wiring also goes through one of thos dots.

(forgot to ask the hole diameters...) Embarassed

On the small square image, are the measurements 50mm between the two holes for the rubber seal, 35mm from center to bottom hole, and 26mm center to top hole? (kind of hard to read when I enlarge it)
thanks

Do not use the bottom of the fender as a reference. They are shaped differently and curve up quite differently.
Yes, I found this out the hard way.
