PostPosted: Sun May 15, 2005 7:17 am    Post subject: My new 64 Bug Reply with quote

I got a call about a week ago from my mom. She said that a lady contacted her saying that she heard I was into Volkswagens and that she wanted to give me hers. I'm not one to turn down a VW, so I have been patiently waiting all week. I had no idea what year this Bug was as I had never gone to ask about the Bug. Instead, I always fondly looked at it as I would pass by it. Yesterday morning, we drove over there and I was just ecstatic to get to see this Bug up close. The couple that owned it are very nice and were really glad it was going to someone that was happy about it. It had been sitting for about 13 years and they last tried to start it in 1999 with no luck. Their sons originally bought it with two friends for a total of $50. I don't have any major plans for it at the moment. I cleaned it all out last night (ended up with a whole garbage can of stuff!). I'm just really excited about it! Very Happy There are a bunch of pictures of it in the gallery, but here are a few:

***EDIT*** I was told when I picked it up that it was a 63, but after asking around, it's actually a 64. Fine with me..it's still earlier than any of my other Bugs that I have owned!

Thanks, Addict! It definitely has some rust issues. Like this for example:

I think the floor pans are pretty solid, then again, I didn't get a good look at them.
I haven't done anything as far as the engine goes. Haven't even checked! This Bug is kind of on hold for a few weeks now until I get some things taken care of..

Don't worry too much about that, you can patch that. Thats the first place they rust anyway, water builds up in there. It is most likely stilla 6V system huh? Have fun with the car Jess. I am real happy for you.

Nice custom paint job there jessica. Just add a few of those magnetic flowers, and an engine and you're set! J/K Not bad, especially being as it was free!

This is actually my 4th Bug, but I only have 3 at the moment. Always good to have another one.

Bob, I've been off the Samba enough lately though! lol The summer will definitely be busy. I was actually going to start work on my 67, so now it's a toss-up on which one to start. Maybe I'll just do them both. Very Happy

Well, I took the shop vac to the engine compartment the other day and it looks a little better:

The big question still remains if it will turn over or not. I have yet to have enough time to get over there to try it. Will find out soon though!

The next thing to do when I get time is to get it into the garage and start tearing it apart. All the door panels are already off, so that's already done. The passenger door I can't get open at the moment, so I want to get that working to make working on the car a little easier. After inspecting the floor pans a little bit (have mostly done this in the dark, so it's been hard to tell), I think they need to be replaced, but I will know for sure once I get it in the garage and get going on it.

Here's some moss growing on the roof of the bug. This is probably one of my favorite pictures of the car.

I finally got my 72 baja out yesterday and took it to visit the 64 for the first time. I think they will get along just fine. Very Happy
