As per my other post and tag line, yes I'm redoing my engine.
It's a '78 Westy 2.0L that has an AC setup in it. I know thath the old style compressors robbed the engine of HP, but here in Texas AC is damn near a must. For me, personally, I've lived a long time w/o it. But now I'm 35 and two young girls my needs have changed.
The Westy might be a part time daily driver ( one of my kids has a walker so it would be easier to transport her around than in the NB). Granted, I would like the leg room if I were to remove the under dash AC.
Question: Is there an AC compressor that won't kill my fresh engine and is it worth putting in? _________________ "Beer is proof that God loves us and wishes us to be happy"- Ben

Ask Gilmore Enterprises in Fla, not sure of the web site. They sell whole units. _________________ 1971 Westfalia "Samantha"

Sanden but you have a lot of your own fabrication to do to mount it up. One type2 listmember has mounted his Sanden UNDER the original tin so there is a perfect air seal in the engine compartment just like the models without a/c. _________________ '78 Westfalia CDN

I already have an AC system mounted with all the hardware. Holes have been cut in tin etc... Damn annoying actually. When I took the original compressor outI sealed up the areas with some flashing.
Does the Sanden model mount up like the old versions? _________________ "Beer is proof that God loves us and wishes us to be happy"- Ben

BD sells a bracket for it you have to modify and it's different from the stock bracket that mounted the York compressor. _________________ '78 Westfalia CDN

I'm installing a kit from Gilmore Enterprises right now as part of a resto-custom I'm doing on my 69 Westy. The kit is really well laid out, straight forward to install and is a good price for what you get. I'm in Louisiana and AC pretty much mandatory. The guy's name is Ed Muha and he's a really good guy to work with. I am actually doing custom dashwork as part of the restoration and he got together vent options for me to work with my project. Ed knows, drives and restores VW's so he's not just a guy selling an air conditioner.
Good Luck |

I just bought a 78 Westy with an A/C unit installed. I live in NW and don't need A/C. I am going to uninstall. A/C is not currently running, not sure what issue is. Anyone interested in buying this used set up? |

Quite a few adapter plates (to switch to Sanden compressor from York) listed on eBay, for those who already have an A/C system in place, but want to upgrade.

tom62, that aircon blower setup is like parts porn, if such a thing exists. Where did you get such a nice looking thing?
I've wanted to do A/C for years but with no references and no ACVWAC (heh) available here it's been a bit of a pipe dream. Most of us don't even have opening quarter windows
Keep showing the A/C please!
I suppose the $1000 question is can any of these be used with r134a, because unless there's someone with a secret stash of r12, if it needs filling you're boned. _________________ Vehicle: 1975 Special order delivery walkthrough panel based pop-top camper (LCA / Sunliner). The A/C came on the truck I think it was dealer installed when the truck was bought. Still have the org hoses on it. I had to change a relay and compressor "O" rings to get it going.
As far as the 134 goes I changed the oil in the compressor and charged with 134 works good for me with no complaints.
You can tell when the compressor kicks on but it's not a big loss of power,
I defiantly take the power loss over a hot interior.
You should check with Ed at Gilmore about one of his units, they look good and work great.
IF my compressor fails I'll change it out to a Sanden from Gilmore's |
