My 73 thing won't idle when the engine gets hot. It also stumbles/hesitates during light acceleration. Any ideas? Carb problem? Question

Take this with a grain of salt as I am new also to the Thing but I had a similar issue that I just fixed, stumbling at idle or light acceleration, but not when it got hot though. I just purchased my Thing and when I stepped on the gas, it sputtered and seemed like it was almost about to die and then it kicked in. I had to keep the revs up to get anyplace when starting from a stop. I just replaced my distributor with a vacuum advance style and re-timed the engine with this new distributor and now it runs much nicer, no more stumbling out of the gate. I also need to one day rebuild the carb or at least clean it out but after replacing the disty yesterday, it is running nicely. So, your issue could be timing related. It was for me.

What distributor do you have? 009 or a vacuum advance of some kind?

Other things to make sure are up to snuff would be spark plugs, spark plug wires, and how are the points, condensor, and cap in your current distributor. You want to make sure all those are good also.

Mine had the same problem- it ended up being the idle cutoff solenoid. Picked up a new one from CIP1 for less than $15.
