Well as I stated in my previous thread, http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=123259 , here are some pics of my new acquisition:
....and the Achilles' Heel.
The pics seem to be compressed (left click and they'll be a little better), but I think they are adequate. As you can see there is work to be done, but I think she's pretty nice for an original. If I recall correctly, she had some touch-up painting done in the 70's, which resulted in some of the rubber moulding having some over-painting on it.
I also ran across a rather pleasant surprise in the pouch on the left door panel: an original operator's manual and service booklets. |

Thanks for the compliments! I apologize for originally posting this in the wrong forum. Thanks to whoever moved this to the "Reader's Ride" forum.
Also, what color would you guys say this car is? I've looked at some color chips, but there are two or three turquoise(ish) looking colors that look about the same to me. |

No offense taken at all. I don't particularly like white wall tires, but I do admit that I think they'd look great on this car. She may get a "real" set before all is said and done. |

lol, dont be put off from just my opinion, thats just cause they are made in france or italy and have to be shipped here etc... you know i am further away from those countries than you are so maybe they are cheaper in the usa. i think they are called firestone f-560, which may come in different sizes, but that price is for 4 165sr15 tires. i cant find them on the internet, not for a vw, but i think thats because they come in different sizes for different classics... |

Yeah, I'm looking forward to getting started, but the heater channel rot really bothers me. I just hope I'm up to the task of replacing it. I'm also wondering how much restoring I should do without ruining the "originality" of the car. |

Nah, don't do it! Those are real whitewalls! The car is a '63 German VW, not a '53 American car. Thin whitewalls are the way to go if you're going to run them.
Looks great! |

Which would be correct? I've seen Beetles with thick whitewalls, which I think would look good for this car, but if thin whitewalls are more correct, then I'll keep them. Or maybe buy some new ones... |

hhhmmm, it would look good either way. if you havent got a lot of money to spend on the car dont waste time trying to find the exact year tires...takes too much time...or maybe not if you know a lot of people here on the samba... |

Thanks for the advice. Were there year-specific tires or were certain tires used in year brackets (say from 1960-1965)?
Would a stock '63 Beetle come with wide white wall tires? I ask because my goal is to make her as stock as possible. If she didn't have it coming out of the factory, she probably won't get it (with the possible exception being the addition of side-view mirrors)... |
