Did busses have some cloth behind the grille when new? Never though there was anything in there.

Here is a quick sketch of my grill cloth, with associated dimensions. These are approximate, as my cloth was pretty close to falling apart in my hands, but it should be a starting poinht for anyone trying to make their own.

This is a template for a 60/61 style Sapphire I so your radio may differ slightly.

I have seen a piece of cloth there.
I have also never had a Bus with a factory radio
That cloth may only be used/included with a particular radio install.

That would make sense. The purpose of the grille cloth is to hide the radio and speaker, and to protect the speaker. If your 3 year old can see the speaker, he's tempted to poke things into it. Who, me? It also keeps the sun off, which is death to speaker cones.

Starting in 1960 with the Sapphire I bus kit there was a Bendix part number for it, with a list price of 30 cents. When Motorola starting making Sapphire bus radios in 1964 there was also a Motorola part number for it. I've never seen it in a VW parts book. It's basically black, starched, light weight cotton muslin, cut to size with the radio hole cut out.

i also put cloth across mine- it looks like crap sitting naked otherwise and debris falls into etc.

Much less noticeable with cloth there- isn't that the whole reason it goes behind the dash in the first place?

My bus came with a radio and still has this cloth. Its brown and is like a light burlap. Its a loose weave. I put a Sapphire II in that crapped out so I need to take it out and have it rebuilt, if I think of it I'll take a picture of the cloth when I take out the radio.

67 Westy (Kombi). Radio installed by dealer and untouched since teardown. Grill "cloth" was gray fiberglass insect screen. I bought a roll of it at home depot and cut a new one using the old wasted one as a pattern. Offered it up from behind and it looks great.
I am however tempted to rattle can it flat black before installing. I have not installed it yet because I am still looking for a speaker.

Sapphire or Blaupunkt dealer install?

Is there a difference or variance in the 'cloth'? Anyone else?

Seems like it's just screening mesh then, not a true fabric cloth?

If so, easy enough! Smile

i never heard of the speaker location and the cloth in the dash. i guess i never thought of how the radio would mount. since, i have a 64 bus with no radio or nothing.
does anyone have any pictures or explain how to install the speaker? is there a special bracket to hold the speaker and the cloth cover? any picture would be very nice.

thank you

the top pics shows the speaker and bracket. It is mounted to the side of the radio, on the pass side.

This thread is mostly concerning the absolute stock style (single speaker, mono) dealer installations of sapphire radios particularly, but the operation is similar for vintage blaupunkts.

The grill cloth reference is an aestetic and protective layer between the speaker and radio surround and the back of the stock dash, to keep a nice appearance and junk out.

I am brining up the old thread to dermine the look and texture that is correct for the cloth itself.

excellent picture. i agree with keep it stock in the buses.

i love my panel van but a nice original am/fm radio would be nice. just like the picture. i know panels didn't come with radios.

i'm going to have to make a bracket and take a closer look at my dash. i always wondered why it's so wide open in the dash.

thanks all, for the quick replies

FWIW - my last so23 had a dealer installed Blaupunkt in it, and it also had the black screen-like material behind the dash. I seem to remember it having a cardboard border around it to hold the shape, but my memory could be failing me.
