That is very sexy. I don't remember seeing too many black knob radios.

Thank you.
Yes, the black knob radios are uncommon.
On this one the buttons are just painted though, not cast.
It is an original though, I did not paint them.
The tuning knobs are cast.

On a very similar topic, if anyone has an original Bus Sapphire rear mounting bracket, I would like to see the shape so I can replicate it... or buy it - I'd like to add one.

Nice work Everett.

I'll check to see about that bracket. Are you talking about the piece of steel that is sort of twisted in an odd manner, that attaches to the threaded bolt int he back of the radio, and through a bolt that holds the dash tray?

I know I've got one around my shop. If I get to cleaning this week-I'll let you know.

Yes, something like the "7C" bracket seen in this photo

This is from the Sapphire III installation booklet

I'm not sure which one was used for a Sapphire I but it may look something like the one 2nd from the right here, but with different bends:

The one 2nd from the right is for a Beetle.
The others I am not sure of, other than the one 2nd from the left and the one on the far right are Sapphire mounting brackets.

The one on my bus is similar to the second from the right, but the bends are a bit different.
A photo of it can seen in my gallery on page 8, but I can't post a link from my phone.

Yes, it does.

I thought it went straight up and bent over to mount to the radio stud from the left side so that helps.

Here's mine. The dog-eared end goes on the parcel tray mid fastener.

Thanks, the measurements really helped me tweak the bracket I had been twisting around to try and get it to fit.

Bracket made with an aluminum piece from the hardware store:

If I can't find a real one in a reasonable time frame, I will duplicate it in steel - the aluminum is flimsy.

Wow, no action on this thread for a few years now...

Can anyone describe how the speaker cloth is attached or glued in place to the backside of the dashboard (before the radio and speaker is installed)? Do you use some sort of adhesive? Or does the install of the radio and speaker grill themselves hold the speaker cloth in place without any adhesive? Has anyone found the perfect material to use for the speaker cloth itself? The photo of the silver mosquito or screen door screen above are a bit too "see-thru", so I wonder if an suitable dark or black mesh material has been discovered. Sources? Availability?

Thanks!

Bill

I can't speak to finding something better as I was happy with what I did above.
Nothing has deteriorated over the past 2 years but the top right corner came unglued and has dropped a little.
I may re-glued that at some point.
As far as I know it wasn't glued in place originally, I think the material was so stiff or was sprayed with starch, as mentioned earlier, to keep it formed to the dash?

Not totally related to the installation but for my own install I replaced my painted black knob radio tuner knobs with some cast black ones I found.
I also found an original rear speaker bracket, identical to the one BarryL posted above.
As far as I know it's common for there to be no rear bracket in place on Bus radios. Or installers left them off - it's kind of a pain to install, although maybe not if you do them all the time.

Thanks for the reply Everett.

I think I'll want to use an adhesive to hold the screen in place top and bottom. What did you end up using? I'm thinking of cleaning the surface under the dash with wax and grease remover, then a bead of 3M weatherstrip adhesive top and bottom, then lay in and press the screen into the adhesive beads, and cross my fingers that it will hold forever! I have some close-mesh charcoal color mosquito screen, and I might mist it a little with aerosol black satin paint before install. Should help fill the pores and maybe stiffen it up more.

I just put a tiny dab of Goop in the upper and lower right corners.
Probably not enough or the under-dash area was dirty.
I just quickly wiped it down before pressing it up in there. Lazy me.

I wish I had seen this thread a week or so ago. Didnt know that the mesh should cover the radio itself, looks way better as seen in dubstars before and after photos. Not too bad of a job to pull the radio and speaker again and do it right.
*EDIT* I went back to my Gallery photos and looked again, not only did I not cover the radio I also put the mesh material on the back side of the speaker bracket. Duh!

I thought of using some speak cloth as it was mentioned here so I went to the Salvation Army store to pick up a cheap speaker to steal it from but it seemed too thin to me.

Maybe the online stuff is thicker?

I think it depends on the speaker; look for ones from the 50s and early 60s for thicker cloth...
