Very Happy Hi, I am doing a rebuild on a friends motor out of her '68 fastback. The exhaust has a junction on the pipes from the rear cylinders to the muffeler. When I pulled the exhaust off, they were both loose. Is there supposed to be some kind of fiber ring in there, or is it just metal to metal.. I have not separated the pieces, I just wanted to be ready when the time comes to put the motor back in.... If there is supposed to be some kind of gaskety thing, where could I get ahold of some??? Thanks Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

There is supposed to be a copper washer between that upper heat exchanger and the muffler. It is installed when the 2 are put together. If the muffler has been on the engine for a while, those big hex nuts will be rusted tight, and may take some heat to get them apart.

If you are lucky, you might find a T-3 muffler install kit at one of the VW parts suppliers. Or, like my last one, I made it out of very soft copper wire. I have been told, you can use the one that is for the 1700cc T-2 engines, and make it round.

Very Happy Thanks... I took them apart and one has no ring, and one has most of a ring. It is enough to use as a patern for some really soft copper stock that I have.. I am a type 1 guy, and I had never had one of these come across my bench. I am however looking to buy an early squareback!!! Twisted Evil Twisted Evil
