I need to get more air into the engine compartment of my 66 type 1. Can't find or afford a vert lid. I was thinking of taking an old deck lid and grafting in the vents from a late model lid. Has anyone tried this and did it work? Are there rain gutters that need to be installed with the extra vents?

Also, are there any other years besides a 66 that will interchange for my deck lid?

Have a look in my gallery. The license plate bracket holds the plate about an inch away from the grill. From the back of the car, the grill is concealed. It's a clean and cheap option to the vert lid.

Both Bill May (Bill May) and Rob LaGrange (www.sandiegovwparts.com) have done this with great results. Just be sure to graft in vents from a 1969-71 beetle as using 1972-later vents look too odd as they are shorter in length.

A 1965 decklid can be a directly bolted on with no mods. A 1949-64 lid can also be used but you'll need to add a small catch for the earlier style decklid lock to your existing apron. Of course the earlier the vert lid, the more money it's going to cost you.

One other note, have you considered installing decklid stand-offs? Alot cheaper solution for under $15 and you'll net the same results.
