Just ran across this old picture of a sweet custom Thing that I saw at a VW show in Indiana back in the late 80s.

I wonder what ever happened to that Thing.

Nice look 181, welcome to the forum.

Not a good idea to keep the to folded down like that. Pretty hard on the side clips. Also, the metal top frame may cut into the fabric.

Thanks! Actually been on here for what seems like forever, just don't post much. And yeah...that's a bit of a sore subject for me. The top was new in 09, previous owner blew a spark plug out, and left her sit outside, uncovered, with the top down for 3 years just as it is now. So, of course it is torn in spots. TTS frame/top coming before next spring.

Have been lurking for a while as I was looking to buy a Thing. We found one in New Port Orgeon and bought it. Drove it over 1,400 miles to Victorville Ca in Southern Ca. Took us 2 1/2 weeks to come down Hwy 1 and over to 395 and home. Have taken the Thing to several of the Car shows here and just did a Rt 66 one this past weekend. I live 2 blocks from Rt 66 in Victorville. My Wife really loves this cute little Thing and our Goldenretriver realy love to ride in the back. I have gone trough it and replaced the stearing box all the brake shoes and wheel cylinders and hardwear. some of the rubber as most of it was very good. Have a lift in my back yard so it makes it nice to work on. Worked on German cars for over 50 years. Spent 14 years in Germany with the Air Force. Retired now and taking it easy.

My daughters call it the barbie jeep and while the plan was to paint it, the unique look has truly grown on me. Can't drive anywhere without having pics taken.

Don Whyte from Aberdeenshire Scotland.

I am new to Samba.com and this is a picture taken the day my Trekker/Thing Type 182 came home. A few weeks later I had it road legal and on the road. I took it to a local vintage/veteran car rally and won a prize for "The most unusual vehicle" There are very few of these in the UK and even fewer in Scotland and fewer again like mine in right hand drive. My type 182 is now in my garage in bits, being restored. Note the typical Scottish weather!

Hi everyone!
I'm new to Sambà.ñom
Despite the fact that I read your forum and buy various spare parts for a long time, only recently decided to sign up.
Here is my VW THING
Bought in the U.S., then sent to Russia and restored.
